To the Editor:
I am concerned about the recent increase of the 2008 sidewalk improvement program owner’s payment. The new established rate is $4.25 a square foot. The program has been successful in the past with the rate around $2.25. I have walked many sidewalks in the village with my family to enjoy a bit of fresh air and exercise. Improvements made with help from this program increase the safety of others as well as anyone who uses them.
With the increase in cost, many who could not afford before will think twice about improving what they currently have in place.

Other means of returning the rates that have been steady and beneficial might be approving a sliding scale or guidelines for others who may not be able to afford the cost.
Possible community service or summer program volunteers with supervised staff from public works could help with replacements. Lets not let a good program fade away because of the increase.
