Penn Yan hosts Wayland-Cohocton at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28  at Penn Yan Academy in the first round of their Section V Tournament play. All tickets cost $4.

The Penn Yan Mustang Roundball Five, gearing up for the upcoming Section V Tournament, dropped a 59-42 decision to Geneva in the Finger Lakes East Crossover Tournament in Waterloo on Wednesday evening.

This one game tourney pitted the second place team in the Finger Lakes East D-II (Penn Yan) against the second place team in the Finger Lakes East D-I (Geneva).  The Mustangs started well in this contest, building up a 18-14 lead after one quarter.

But the talented Panther team from Geneva controlled this game from that point, outscoring the Mustangs 45-24 in the final three quarters.

James Willson topped the Penn Yan scoring sheet with 16 points. Ethan Kamholtz and Mike Worden added seven points each. Ryan Siwak chipped in six points and Adam Stork, five. The Orange and Blue Hoopsters go into the Section V Tournament with a 14-6 record and are a No. 2 seed in the B-1 tournament. The 88th Annual Section V Boy’s Basketball Tournament tips off this week.

Penn Yan’s opening game in the B-1 Section V Tournament will be at home on Saturday, Feb. 28 against the No. 7 seed Wayland-Cohocton Golden Eagles. The Mustangs will be the No. 2 seed in the B-1 Tournament.

The Mustang Cagers have defeated Way-Co twice this season in non-league games. Penn Yan defeated the Eagles 54-43 at home on Dec. 2. In this game, Kamholtz and Patrick Rivera scored 15 points each to lead the Mustangs. Willson added 13 points. On Jan. 6 in Wayland, the Orange and Blue defeated Way-Co 52-42. In this win, Willson paced the Mustang offense with 18 points and Kamholtz added 14 points. Defeating a team three times in one season is a difficult chore.

The talented and scrappy Mustang team hope to be up to this task. Gametime is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Penn Yan Academy gym.

Penn Yan’s talented senior center, James Willson was the named the Bird’s Eye Food Player of the Week in the Finger Lakes East for week 12. The 6’5” Mustang standout had a huge game in an overtime win over first place Midlakes last week.  He scored 27 points in this contest, mostly in the second half and overtime period to boost Penn Yan to this big win. Willson also pulled down 14 rebounds in this game. Later in the week, he tallied 17 points and completed his double/double with 13 rebounds in a victory over Marcus Whitman. Forty-four points and 27 rebounds certainly is a pretty good weeks work. Congratulations to the Mustang’s James Willson on this deserved honor.
