Congressman Tom Reed today was appointed to three key Congressional subcommittees with broad oversight of national transportation and infrastructure issues, and was named Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials. U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) also appointed Reed to the Subcommittee on Aviation and the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment, according to a statement released by Reed's office on Thursday.

“We must do more with less and eliminate wasteful spending when it comes to rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure and putting people back to work,” said Chairman Mica.  “Congressman Reed’s background as a business owner and the Mayor of Corning will make him a valuable addition to these subcommittees.  His experience facing tough budget issues will allow him to immediately contribute to the work of producing fiscally responsible legislation to improve our nation’s rail infrastructure, provide cost effective passenger rail transportation, and create jobs.”

“Transportation and infrastructure improvements help build a foundation for long-term business growth and more jobs,” Reed observed. “I cannot wait to get to work on rebuilding our economy so taxpayers can see a return on their infrastructure investments.”

The Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials has jurisdiction over the economic and safety regulation of railroads and the agencies that administer those regulations.  The Subcommittee also oversees federal passenger rail programs and Amtrak.  The transportation of hazardous materials and pipeline safety also fall under the jurisdiction of the Subcommittee.  As Vice Chair, Reed will play a particularly active role in the Subcommittee’s work, and be called upon to fulfill the chairman’s duties as necessary.

“The safety and modern capacity of our rail system and reliable transit of energy resources play a big role in economic development, both in Upstate New York and our nation,” Reed said. “I am honored that Chairman Mica sees an active role for me as vice chairman of this subcommittee.”

“Our nation faces significant challenges in improving our transportation infrastructure which includes our nation’s freight and passenger railroads,” said Congressman Bill Shuster, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials.  “It will take a strong team to move Chairman Mica’s agenda and I am pleased to have Tom Reed aboard as Vice Chairman.”

The Subcommittee on Aviation oversees aviation safety and infrastructure and the programs of the Federal Aviation Administration, including NextGen air traffic control modernization.  The Subcommittee also monitors the impacts of transportation security on aviation safety, the traveling public, and the industry.  The Subcommittee is responsible for writing the next major multi-year authorization of the nation’s aviation infrastructure and safety programs and policies.

The Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment has jurisdiction over clean water infrastructure; water resources development for navigation, flood protection, and ecosystem restoration; water pollution control; and hazardous waste cleanup.  The Subcommittee also conducts oversight of the federal regulation of clean water.  Agencies that fall within the Subcommittee’s jurisdiction include the Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
