While conducting an audit and investigation of the Monterey Volunteer Fire Department in Schuyler County, the New York State Comptroller's staff have uncovered the alleged misappropriation of more than $100,000 in department funds. They say the misuse of this money has been traced to Kimberly States, department treasurer and her husband, Larry States, who served as chief of the department.
Comptroller staff referred their findings to the New York State Police, who arrested both individuals today. The comptroller has also requested that staff expand their probe to include the Schuyler County Sheriff's Department where Mr. States serves as a sergeant and jail administrator.
The comptroller's audit of the Monterey Volunteer Fire Department began in August 2012 and is expected to be complete in the coming months.
"For more than five years, these officials were able to embezzle department funds to help pay for their home mortgage, cell phones, groceries, concert tickets, family vacations and a personal vehicle," State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli said, adding, "Unfortunately, my office continues to uncover cases where public figures abuse their positions to enrich themselves at the expense of taxpayers. Thankfully, the coordinated efforts of the New York State Police and members of my staff helped bring these individuals to justice. My office will fully look into the wrongdoing of these individuals to ensure that any inappropriate activity is identified."
