The Penn Yan Elementary Drama Club will present their spring musical “Giants in the Sky” this Thursday and Friday, April 19 & 20 at 6:30 p.m. on the stage of the Penn Yan Academy Auditorium. Tickets are $8, available at the door.
A cast of 70 talented youngsters bring the magical story of “Giants in the Sky” to life, exploring the world of giants who live above the clouds. Ever since they left Earth a long time ago, the giants have made a life up above, where their job is to keep the sky beautiful. They polish the stars, poke the clouds to let it rain, and paint the sunsets. But there is one curious giant who wonders what life is like on Earth, so she steals a key to the locked up “beanstalk” and embarks on an adventure down below.
With music and lyrics by Denver Casado and book and lyrics by Kerry Kazmierowicztrimm, the two writers say, “This musical was inspired by the common myth that Giants live up in clouds. We began to wonder, ‘What it’s like up there? What do they do all day? What would happen if one giant took a big risk and came down to earth?’ We also loved the idea of seeing kids play GIANTS on stage, with trees and houses coming up to their knees!”
Inspired by one of their favorite Sondheim songs from his hit musical “Into the Woods,” they began exploring and playing in this imaginary world. “We wanted the central relationship of the show to be real. Something that kids could connect with.”
That’s why the show focuses on the friendship between Heeshee and Bert (played by Ella Kinsey and Maihue Wiltberger), and how great friends are something you shouldn’t take for granted. The song “While You Can” is a wonderful reminder for all of us to show appreciation to the special people in our lives.
