Many people have grown up singing in various groups. Whether it is children’s chorus in Sunday school, glee club in high school, college chorale, or adult worship choir, community chorus would seem the next logical step.
There is nothing quite so magical as singing in a group. By letting go of personal identity in order to aspire to something grander, one becomes a small cog in a very large wheel of harmony.
On Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m., one of our local favorites, Community Chorus, will perform at the Penn Yan Courthouse lawn located on Court and Main Streets.
Director Peg Patterson is well known for her work with PYTCO and other community plays.
PYTCo just completed the production of “The Most Happy Fella.” Peg is also a vocal music teacher at the Penn Yan Elementary School. The chorus is accompanied by pianist Lucinda Loomis who plays an incredible array of music.
The chorus includes voices ranging from teens through the 80’s who come from Hammondsport, Geneva, Branchport, and all the communities of Penn Yan.
The group rehearses at the Penn Yan First Baptist church Monday evenings and perform three concerts a year — Christmas, Spring and the Summer concert on the courthouse lawn.
A variety of music, including a sing-a-long where they encourage the audience to participate, will be performed. This performance will feature some 60’s rock and roll, a montage of hits from “My Fair Lady,” Josh Grobin’s “You Raise Me Up,” and, you can get your kicks on “Route 66.”
The chorus always welcomes new members and invites anyone to join. This is an avenue for area singers to come together and share their gift of musical talent through their common bond of love for choral music.
There is no admission to the concert. Bring your own lawn chairs, as this is an outdoor concert. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the adjoining Baptist Church. The Penn Yan Rotary Club will offer refreshments.
There’s plenty of free parking and hospitality.
