PYTCO will present “Sorry Wrong Number” and “The Hitchhiker”  at 7:30 p.m. April 19 at St. Michael’s Church in Penn Yan. These fully-staged versions of tow of the most eerie and chilling examples of classic radio dramas will be complimented by a selection of homemade desserts and beverages. Tickets are available in advance for $10 at Giles Sur Fine in Dundee and Henderson’s Drug Store in Penn Yan.

Chicken Barbecue
The Penn Yan Dollars for Scholars will sponsor a chicken barbecue at the Lyons National Bank beginning at 11 a.m. April 19.  Price is $8 per meal which includes 1/2 chicken, salad, salt potatoes and roll.  All proceeds to benefit scholarships for the PYA Class of 2008.

Torrey Comprehensive Plan meeting

The Town of Torrey Planning Board will host a public hearing on the draft Comprehensive Plan.  This event will be held on Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at the Torrey Town Hall, located at 56 Geneva St., Dresden.  All interested citizens are encouraged to attend to learn about the Town’s proposed comprehensive plan.  The hearing will consist of a brief presentation on the plan and a question and a swer session for attendees. Soldiers & Sailors
Auxiliary Sponsoring Book Fair

 The Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is sponsoring a “Books Are Fun” book sale Thursday and Friday, April 24 and 25, at the Hospital, 418 North Main Street, Penn Yan. The book sale will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday. It will feature a large selection of quality books for all ages and interests as well as unique gifts, all at great savings. Proceeds from the sale will be used by the Soldiers & Sailors Auxiliary to support the Hospital’s upcoming renovation and expansion project. The public is welcome.

Parenting with Dignity

Boater Safety Course

This year, all operators of personal watercraft must have a boater safety card regardless of age. The Yates County Sheriff’s Department Marine Patrol will offer a boater’s safety course for people ages 10 through 18. Adults are welcome. This course, held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26 at the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, 227 Main St., Penn Yan, is limited to 35 students. Tickets to attend must be purchased in advance at the records window in the Public Safety Building, 227 Main St., Penn Yan  by April 25. Or, the $5 payment per person can be made in advance by sending a money order or bank check (no personal checks) to the Sheriff’s Office by April 23. For details visit www.yatescountysheriff.org.

Humane Society
Annual Dinner

The Humane Society of Yates County will hold its Spring for Animals annual dinner on Saturday, April 26 at Sarrasin’s on the Lake in Penn Yan. Bluegrass Jam

Penn Yan Elementary Book Fair

A book fair will be held in the Penn Yan Elementary Great room April 28 to May 2. 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday. Family night Thursday, May 1 from 5:30 to 8 pm.

Painting Class
Robin Secrest will conduct a series of eight oil painting classes for adults starting April 29 and continuing each Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 through June 17. It will cover the layering techniques of oil painting capturing depth, light and shadow. Cost of the class is $80 for members and $100 from non-members.
She also will be conducting classes for youth from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. starting April 29 and continuing through June 3. Students will experiment with different painting techniques, materials and subject matter. Cost is $30.

The Dundee Baptist Church, Seneca Street, Dundee will be having a Ham Loaf Dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 1.  Cost: Adults $9; school age children $4, preschoolers, no charge.  Salad bar and homemade desserts included.

Friday, May 2
Opening Reception at The Gallery

The YCAC Gallery hosts a reception for their new exhibit, Baskets, Birds, and Blooms from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 2.  The exhibit features contemporary and authentic reproductions of historic baskets (Finger Lakes Basket Weaver’s Guild), Dr. Christopher Cove’s wildlife photography and Marion Cassie’s floral watercolors.  The exhibit runs through June 7.  The Gallery, 119 East Elm St., Penn Yan, is free and open to the public.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.to 3 p.m. For details call 315-536-8226.

National Scrapbooking Day Crop

Crop will be held Saturday May 3 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Benton Town Hall, 996 Route 14A, Penn Yan.  Cost is $10 per cropper.  Registration is recommended.  Crop includes drinks, snacks, door prizes, lots of table space and tools for use.  There will also be merchandise for sale. Yard Sale
A Yard Sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 3 in the Penn Yan Middle School gymnasium. All proceeds will be donated to the Penn Yan Middle School Morning Forum, which recognizes student achievement and the five middle school values.

Run For The Son
The Finger Lakes Faithriders Chapter of the Christian Motorcyclist Association will be participating in the annual 100 mile “Run For The Son” fundraising ride on Saturday, May 3. The ride leaves from Wendy’s/Tim Horton’s Restaurants near Parkway Plaza on Routes. 5 & 20 in Canandaigua. Basket Weaving Class
A one-day class  at the Yates County Arts Center will enable participants to create a useful "Tote" basket. Learn construction techniques and design and teach the class to make a tote basket from natural materials. A benefit for Jessica Sutton, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4 at the VFW in Bath. She is in the intesive care burn unit at Strong Memorial Hospital following an unfortunate accident. Civil War Exhibit
The Civil War Exhibit, “Soldiers of the Southern Tier:  From Service to Veteran Organizations,” is on display through May 4 at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum of early aviation and local history in Hammondsport.  This exhibit focuses on the stories of local soldiers and their service during and after the Civil War, along with arms, equipment, and personal effects.  Open daily from 10-4 through April 30.  As of May 1, the museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9-5 and Sunday from 10-5.   The Curtiss Museum is located at 8419 State Route 54, Hammondsport.  www.glennhcurtissmuseum.org

All-Star Jazz Band
The Kiwanis Club of Penn Yan will host an afternoon of music, dancing and refreshment from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 4 at the Penn Yan Moose Club. Enjoy light refreshments, a silent auction, 50/50 drawings and big band sounds. Admission is $10 per person or $17 per couple. Group Field Period to Italy

Keuka College Professor of History Sander Diamond is planning to lead a Group Field Period to Italy in January 2009 and he will conduct an information/interest session Monday, May 5 at 6 p.m. in Hegeman Hall lobby.
The trip is open to all Keuka students, their families, alumni, and members of the community. Highlights of the tour will include such cities as Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples, and the island of Capri.

Penn Yan Dollars for Scholars and Operation Graduation 2008 will sponsor a Golf Ball Drop to be held at the Penn Yan Firemens' Field May 10. Golf Balls are $10 each with six chances to win.  Prizes are $500 (first);  $200 (second); $100 (third and fourth); and $50 (fifth and sixth). There will also be a chicken barbecue for $7.50/meal and an ongoing silent auction throughout the afternoon.

Stamping Fun

Stamping Fun classes continue at the Yates County Arts Center on Tuesday, May 20 from 5 to 7 pm. This is an intergenerational class led by Jan Enos. This will be repeated the third Tuesday of each month through November. These workshops showcase techniques to create greeting cards and other stationary-projects. May Banquet

The Yates Office for the Aging is hosting their largest event, the May Banquet at 4 p.m. on May 21 at St. Michael’s Church in Penn Yan. Please come enjoy hors d’oeuvre and the choice of two entrees, Chicken Cordon Bleu or Shrimp Scampi over rice for dinner being served at 5 p.m.  The evening includes entertainment, door prizes, and a 50/50 raffle.  Tickets are available at the Office for the Aging only for a $7 donation.  Tickets are on sale through May 19 at  noon. 

Historical Society Luncheon
The Yates County Genealogical and Historical Society presents a talk by Rich MacAlpine based on the Schofield family letters and entitled “Yates County’s Admiral: Frank H. Schofield”.  The talk will be given May 21 at noon at the Essenhaus Restaurant, 1300 Route 14A, Penn Yan.  To make reservations to attend the luncheon, please call the Historical Society at 315-536-7318.  Tickets are $12 each.

Chicken Barbecue

Saturday May 24 the Yates County Genealogical and Historical Society will sponsor a Spring Chicken Barbecue from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Lyons National Bank, Liberty Street, Penn Yan. Full dinners $8 and just a half chicken $6.

Finger Lakes Boating Museum Exhibit

The Annual Finger Lakes Boating Museum Exhibit features boats made in the 19th and 20th centuries by Skaneateles boat builders.  They will be on display from through May 25 at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum of early aviation and local history in Hammondsport.  Open daily from 10-4 through April 30.  As of May 1, the museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9-5 and Sunday from 10-5. On May 28, The Yates County Genealogical and Historical Society will sponsor an Historic Day Trip to Rochester.  Sights of interest will include the George Eastman House, Campbell-Whittlesey House and more.  $70 includes transportation and all admissions.  Call YCGHS at 315-536-7318 for further information and reservations by May 21.

Alzheimer’s Association Seminars

The Alzheimer’s Association offers free seminars for caregivers of individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The seminars, “Dealing with Denial - How to Tell Other Individuals” and “Life After Diagnosis” will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 at Ontario County Officer for the Aging, Human Service Building, 3010 County Complex Drive, Canandaigua.
