The Golden Age of Baseball
Is baseball still the National Pastime?  Maybe, maybe not.  But in the 1940s and 1950s it certainly was, and as such it reflected the strengths and weaknesses of the nation that followed it.  Hear more about those days -- they're next up in the Penn Yan Public Library's series on Baseball in  American History at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the library meeting room. Grape History Train Ride

Grape History Train Ride round trip from Himrod to Watkins Glen and back boarding at 1:30 Thursday, Oct. 23 for a two and a half hour excursion.  This trip will be accompanied by live musicians, and taste great wines and fall finger foods. There’ll be historical narration and a special event for the youngsters. Tickets are $35 per adult and $15 per child.  A maximum of 100 tickets will be sold. Fall Rummage Sale
The Benton Methodist Church will hold a Fall Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Oct. 23 and 24 with a $1 bag sale on Friday.

Meet the Candidates
The Schuyler County League of Women Voters will hold their annual “Meet the Candidates” luncheon meeting on Oct.23 at the Seneca Harbor Station restaurant.  Candidates for U.S. Congress as well as NYS Senate and Assembly have been invited to answer questions from the audience.  The meeting will begin at 11:45 a.m.  The cost is $12.50 with your choice of:  French onion steak sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich or Ceasar salad platter.

Olmstead Ensemble in Spotlight Series
Keuka College’s Spotlight Series continues Thursday, Oct. 23 with a performance by the highly acclaimed Olmsted Ensemble   at 7 p.m. in Norton Chapel.
The Olmsted Ensemble performs European and American chamber music from the 18th to the 21st centuries, with wide-ranging repertoire from beloved masterworks to rarely-heard gems.

Adult/Child/Infant  CPR Class
The Yates County American Red Cross is offering Adult/Child/Infant CPR  from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23 at the American Red Cross Office, 121 East Elm St., Penn Yan. Keuka College presents Proof
Proof, winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play, will be staged Oct. 23 to 26 in the Red Barn Theatre at Keuka College. Curtain is 8 p.m. for the Thursday, Oct. 23 through Saturday, Oct. 25 shows, and 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26.

Spaghetti Dinner

Benefit Dinner
A benefit dinner for Tami Miller Plumlee at Miller Land (Miller lane is off Rte 14A, halfway between Dundee and Penn Yan, off Welker Road) will be held Saturday, Oct. 25 serving an all you can eat Roast Beef and Pork Buffet from 4:30 to 8 p.m.
Tami is traveling to Rochester three times a week for dialysis while awaiting a kidney transplant. Cost for the dinner is $12 and includes salad, ice tea, lemonade, coffee and dessert. Presbyterian Church Celebrates History

The First Presbyterian Church of Penn Yan celebrates is history, including the 50 years in its current building on Sunday, Oct. 26. The congregation invites all who attended the church — including former Sunday School students or those who participated in a special event, such as a Baptism or wedding — to join in at the 10:30 Sunday worship service. Fellowship time  follows with coffee, cookies and cake in Crosier Hall. Nursery care is available during the worship service.

Pork Barbecue Dinner

 Area residents with special physical or health-related needs or caregivers of persons with special needs are invited to stop at The Homestead of Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Monday, Oct. 27, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to visit the Shopper’s Service. A mobile clothing company, Shopper’s Service offers a complete selection of men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, undergarments and other accessories in a range of sizes, styles, colors and prices. The company also carries a full line of adaptive shoes and clothing with back snap-away openings, ties and Velcro.

Speaker  addresses Parkinson Therapies
The Finger Lakes Parkinson Disease Support group will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct.27 in the Silver Spoons Café at Schuyler Co. Human Services Complex, 323 Owego Street, Montour Falls
Dr. Fredrick Marshall, Co-Director of the DBS Program and Associate Professor of Neurology at University of Rochester Medical Center will discuss deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery to provide relief from severe PD symptom. He will also address current research, drugs and clinical trials being conducted at University of Rochester’s Movement and Inherited Neurological Unit. U of R. Dept. of Neurology is a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence.

Yates AAUW speaker on pay equity
On Monday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m., the Yates County Branch of the American Association of University Women will hear from Mildred DeWitt, vice president of AAUW’s New York State Legal Advocacy Foundation.

Dine & Discuss on Patient Safety

The Back Pack Program Discussion
On Wednesday, Oct. 29 at noon, George Schaeffer of Millie’s Pantry will let the rest of the community in on an inspiring Yates County story: Under the auspices of Millie’s Pantry (named for the indomitable Millie Bloomquist), each Friday, 439 children go home from Penn Yan and Dundee Head Start, Elementary and Middle Schools with back packs crammed with food. The talk titled “The Back Pack Program: Feeding Children on the Weekends,” takes place at the Yates County Democratic Headquarters at 105 Main Street in Penn Yan and includes a preview of exciting things to come.

Winemaker’s Dinner

Family Style Turkey Supper

The Elks Club Monster Mash Bash will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31. The cost is $5 per person.  Heavy appetizers and DJ.  Elks and Guests welcome.

Community Halloween Party
Area service clubs will sponsor the annual Community Halloween Party for pre-school and elementary children Friday, Oct, 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church Hall in Penn Yan. Students from the Rotary Interact Club and Hubba will supervise games with candy prices. Cider, donuts, apples, hotdogs and chili will be available. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Middlesex Halloween Party

Good Health Fall Fest

Finger Lakes Health’s 11th annual Good Health Fall Fest community health fair is planned Saturday, Nov. 1, 9 a.m. to noon at Penn Yan Elementary School.
Feature events include a cooking demonstration by Penn Yan native Scott Drewno, who serves as executive chef at The Source, a Wolfgang Puck restaurant in Washington, D.C. Also on hand will be Dale Christopher, a teacher and performer, who tours the country encouraging young people to read through his father, Matt Christopher’s, action-packed sports novels.
There also will be lots of health-related and services information from Finger Lakes Health departments and our community partners. There will be cholesterol testing, blood pressure screenings, photo eye screenings, Operation Safe Child, child safety seat checks, McGruff the crime dog, germ busters demos, balance testing on a Wii system, and much more.

Christmas Bazaar
St. John’s Lutheran Church, 514 E. Swamp Road, Penn Yan will hold their annual bazaar from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 1 A variety of handmade items, including tree ornaments and baked goods, will be offered. Coffee, Danish, soup and sandwiches will be available.

Craft and Vendor Sale
A craft and vendor sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 at Tyrone Fire Hall, State Route 226, Tyrone. Proceeds will benefit the Tyrone United Methodist Women’s Mission Fund. Vendors will include Avon, Green Circle Grove, Lia Sophia, Linen World, Mossy Bank Candle Company, Party Lite, Small Indulgences, Tastefully Simple, Crafts by Lois Deming, Jewelry by Candace Denton and more. Lunch items will be offered.

Tony Pulos Memorial Breakfast
The Tony Pulos breakfast will be served during the AMBA Health Fair, from 6 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 in the Watkins Glen Elementary School Cafeteria.
While especially intended for those who have fasted for the blood tests, the pancake breakfast is open to all.  Donations of $6 are encouraged, and all financial donations go toward the Tony Pulos Memorial Fund which benefits Schuyler Hospital.

Four Plays and a Dessert Served by PYTCO

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Elks Club on Main Street in Penn Yan plays host to a dessert party and PYTCo (Pennsylvania Yankee Theater Company) production of four one-act comedies. On Saturday, Nov. 7, the whole thing happens all over again in the American Legion Hall at 10 Spring St. in Dundee. Both productions begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available for $10 at Henderson’s Drug Store in Penn Yan and Giles Shur Fine Food Mart in Dundee.

Harvest Dinner
Italy Valley United Methodist Church will serve its annual Harvest Dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. The menu inlcudes: scalloped potatoes with ham; harvard beets, corn, applesauce, homemade rolls, beverage and dessert. Adults:$7; Under 11:$4  and carryouts are available.

Autumn Adventures

Robin Secrest will teach a Youth Class, Autumn Adventures in Art on Tuesday, Nov. 3 through the 25 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.  at the Upstairs Workshop sponsored by the Yates County Arts Center. Each week will be a different media and project to explore a variety of adventures in the world of art while working with paints, pencils, pastels, etc. The cost is $20. The Yates County Democratic Headquarters will hold an election night party beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4. The headquarters is located on Main Street in Penn Yan.

Election Day Ham Dinner at Oaks Corners Presbyterian Church, five miles north of Geneva on Pre-Emption Road/County Rd. 6 Menu includes ham, baked potatoes, vegetable, applesauce, roll, dessert, and beverage. Cost $8 adults  $4 children

Election Night Dinner
An Election Night Roast Beef Dinner, sponsored by Middlesex United Methodist Church,  Route 245, Middlesex will be held from 4:30 to 7 pm. Tuesday, Nov. 4. Book Fair

Students from Penn Yan Middle School will host a special Book Fair from Scholastic from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 5, 6 and 7 in the Middle School Library. Beaded Jewelry
Joan Belles will teach two sessions on making Beaded Jewelry, from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, Nov. 5 and 7 at the Upstairs Workshop sponsored by the Yates County Arts Center. Rabies Clinic
Yates County Public Health will sponsor a Rabies Clinic for cats, dogs and ferrets from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 at the Maintenance garage next to the court house on Liberty Street in Penn Yan. Bring dogs on leashes and cats in carriers. If you do not bring proof (certificate) of past rabies vaccination, this shot will be good for one year only.

Four Plays and a Dessert Served by PYTCO

On Friday, Nov. 7, the American Legion in Dundee plays host to a dessert party and PYTCo (Pennsylvania Yankee Theater Company) production of four one-act comedies.  The production begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available for $10 at Henderson’s Drug Store in Penn Yan and Giles ShurFine Food Mart in Dundee.

Turkey Party
The Ellsworth Hose Company will hold its annual Turkey Party at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Penn Yan Fire House, Elm St., Penn Yan. There will be prizes and refreshments.

Holiday Craft Show

The 15th Annual Holiday Craft Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Waterloo Volunteer Fire Company. Over 40 craft displays will be featured. Food items will also be available. For details, call 315-539-9667.


Turkey Raffle

A Turkey Raffle will be held Saturday, Nov. 8 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Middlesex Fire House, 5537 Water St., Middlesex. There will be refreshments, a cash raffle and door prizes.

Dinner to support capital project

Patients and staff in the Cardiac Rehab program at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital are hosting a chicken and biscuit dinner to support the renovation project underway at the Penn Yan hospital.
Tickets are now available for the dinner, slated for 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Penn Yan Elks Lodge, 133 Main St., Penn Yan. Meals are $8 each.
Proceeds from the dinner will support the purchase of a brick on the Walkway of Friends on behalf of Soldiers & Sailors Cardiac Rehabilitation program patients and staff.

Defensive Driving

Annual Fall Fest Bazaar
The American Baptist Women Organization of the Penn Yan First Baptist Church is hosting its Annual Fall Fest Bazaar. Bring a friend and embrace the fall weather with seasonal home-made items and more.
The bazaar is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is located in the Great Room of the Penn Yan First Baptist Church on Main Street, Penn Yan.
Featured items and events at the bazaar are handmade wares, baked goods, and a silent auction of themed baskets and quilts. Lunch is available after 11:30 a.m. with a menu of soup or chili.

Carolina Snowflake

Thanksgiving Dinner

The ProAction/Yates Office for the Aging is hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner at 4 p.m.on Nov.19 at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Penn Yan.  The menu will be turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, squash, cranberry jelly, rolls and pumpkin pie with whipped topping.  Tickets, costing $6,  must be purchased at the Office for the Aging, 417 Liberty St., Penn Yan and will go on sale Oct. 20.  No tickets will be sold at the dinner.

Fall Day of Prayer

A Fall Day of Prayer, a time apart for quiet reflection and prayer at Cobblestone Springs in the fall will be held Thursday, Nov. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will begin with an opening prayer and a brief, reflective presentation. Most of the day will be devoted to silent reflection and prayer.  Participants may sign up to meet with Anne Alderman, SSJ individually, if desired.  A time for sharing and a closing prayer will end the day.  Bring a lunch.  Beverages will be provided. Suggested donation is  $20 ($16 member). 


Friday, November 21
Journalist Goodman speaks in Geneva
Amy Goodman, host of the award-winning news program "Democracy Now!", and one of more than 280 arrested in the coverage of protests during the Republican National Convention, is set to come to Geneva to share her experience. Goodman is on a national speaking tour marking the 12th anniversary of the radio program Democracy Now!, as well as the launch of her third book, and will speak at the Smith Opera House on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
