New York State 4-H Livestock Skillathon Team competed at Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky at the North American International Livestock Exposition (N.A.I.L.E.) on Nov. l6, 2009.
Olivia Lamphier, 18, Ontario County 4-H member from Middlesex, placed first at the New York State Fair 4-H Livestock Skillathon competition, qualifying her to represent New York State and advance to the National Competition in Louisville, Ky. Also on the team representing New York were two other 4-H members, Clint Lutz, from Delaware County and Colleen Bailey, from Cattauraugus County.
The Skillathon competition is a part of 4-H’s educational program that tests the comprehensive livestock knowledge of beef cattle, sheep, swine and meat goats.
Some of the classes included livestock breed, equipment, retail and wholesale meat cuts, feed identification, hay and wool judging, meat and carcass evaluation, quality assurance, animal breeding scenario, evaluation performance and marketing information, total livestock industry quiz.
Olivia, daughter of Jeff and Scarlet Lamphier, Middlesex, is an Ontario County 4-H member of the Western Livestock Wranglers has been active in 4-H for 12 years, competing in many livestock competitions. She has exhibited sheep, dairy andmeat goats and poultry at the Ontario County and New York State Fairs.
Olivia is a 2009 Homeschool graduate, now attending Finger Lakes Community College.
