Excitement was in the air as the sun rose over Keuka Lake on the morning of Saturday, July 31.
At 7:30 a.m., after a rousing and at times, emotional, opening ceremony, 30 paddlers in kayaks and canoes took to the waters to officially begin the second annual Krossin’ Keuka.
These paddlers came from four different states. One paddler’s winter residence is Hamburg, Germany. Pontoon boats started taking “pods” of swimmers across the lake where they made their swim to Nemo Point at Keuka College.
Approximately 140 swimmers, coming from nine different states, raised pledges to support the Keuka Comfort Care Home.
The Keuka Comfort Care Home provides a caring, peaceful home for those at the end of their life. Residents and families are assisted by volunteers at no charge. Funds raised by the Krossin’ Keuka event are used for the ongoing operation of the home and resident care.
Prizes were given to Jen Smith and Carol Worth who raised the most money in donations. Also awarded for having the most sponsors were Amy Stewart and Anne Habeeb.
Prizes were stained glass window hangings of the Krossin’ Keuka logo. These were made and donated by Skylarc Studios.
Participants of this event bonded with their efforts. Community members filled the Keuka College point with cheers of encouragement. The morning festivities ended with a promise from many people involved that they “will see you next year!”
