In an effort to make serving their country a little more comfortable at the U.S. Army’s Olaf A. Frederiksen Reserve Center in Penn Yan, the local Elks Lodge, BPOE #1722, had a new refrigerator and two new microwave ovens delivered there by Pinckney Hardware last week.

The center’s commander, Lt. Shawn Kinzer, explains that the center has not had its own cook in many years, and when gathered, the 200 reservists of the 770th Engineer Co. are fed with catered food or MREs (meals ready to eat).

The center’s original commercial kitchen equipment is soon to be removed and sent to Fort Dix in New Jersey.

Thanks to the Elks donations, the eight full time staff at the center, who have little time allotted for meals, will have a functional kitchen again. The equipment was purchased with funds raised by the Elk’s Veterans Committee.

Kinzer says the 770th is scheduled for deployment overseas this summer. Jamie Sisson, Exalted Ruler of the Penn Yan Elks Lodge, says the Elks try their best for the reservists “to make sure they know how much we appreciate them.” Sisson says the local lodge received a $2,000 grant from the Elks National Foundation last year; $1,000 of which was spent on a Christmas Party for the reservists and their families, and the remaining $1,000 will be for a family picnic before they are deployed.
