More than 220 athletes swam, biked, and ran around Keuka Park Sunday, June 11, as part of the Strassburg Sock Keuka Lake Triathlon, organized by Score This.
While the bulk of athletes came from across New York state, ten other states and Canada were also represented in races that included short and intermediate triathlons (swim, bike, run), two distances of “aqua-bike” (swim, bike) races, and an intermediate and short duathlon (run, bike, run).
Scores of volunteers turned out to support the local event partner, the Arts Center of Yates County, and to direct and cheer on the athletes. Lake temperatures hovering around 67 degrees did not deter most racers although a steady breeze did provide an extra challenge for the cyclists and the rapidly warming temperatures had runners asking volunteers to douse them with water as they passed hydration stations.
Matthew Migoris, of Newton, Mass. was the winner of the intermediate tri (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run) with a time of 2:07:21. Marj Rinaldo, of Rochester, was the first woman to cross the line in that event, becoming the 10th finisher with a time of 2:30:20. Darren Schutt, of Webster, finished first in the short tri (.75 swim, 22k bike, 5k run) in 1:08:38, while Paige Lind, of Victor, was the first woman to cross the line in 1:16:46. James Roche, of Fairport, was the first finisher in the 5k run, 22k bike, 5k run duathlon race, beating Jeremy Dodds, of Skaneateles, by a single second. Rachel Brooks, of Orchard Park, was the fifth finisher and first woman to cross the line in the duathlon with a time of 1:31:52. David Patrick, of Geneva, placed 4th in the duathlon with a time of 1:31:12.
