It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Albert L. Curtis Jr. Albert passed away on June 14th at New Hanover Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. Although Albert had currently resided in Jacksonville, North Carolina, his heart was always in Maine.
Foregoing continuing his education at Rockland District High School, Albert enlisted in the United States Army and was initially stationed in Germany, but being who he was he felt it was his duty to volunteer to go to Viet Nam where he served in the conflict there. Spec. 4, Albert, “Short Round,” fought bravely along with his fellow soldiers and returned home having received a purple heart, bronze medal, silver medal, and the army commendation medal with the v for valor presented for sustained acts of heroism. He was very proud of the fact that he also earned his paratrooper wings while a member of the “fighting fourth infantry.” Never one to shy away, Albert was given the job of radio operator as well as that of a forward observer. Although, Albert rarely spoke of his time in Viet Nam, his memories never left him.
After “Nam” Albert took on the job, along with other fishing ventures, of commerical fisherman, fishing for scallops off of Georges Banks along with his father, Albert Sr. and his younger brother “Punky” until the time that the Army deemed him 100% disabled. Albert always met life head on and it was difficult for him to have reached this point.
Albert was loved dearly and survived by his daughter Sherry, (Mike) Delk, of Rochester, MA, Brother Dewey C. “Punky” (Joan) Curtis of Rockland, Sisters Cheryl (Pete) Sheehan and Brenda (Parker) Reynolds, all of Penn Yan, New York. And special sister Laurie Jean, (Tim) Jackson of Washington, Maine. Grandchildren Heather (Kyle) O’Neil, Jarid Cardinal, Daniel, Jacob, and Abby Delk, Great Grandson Henry Albert O’Neil. Albert was predeceased by his parents, Albert Sr. and Eva Curtis. Maternal grandparents, Elzina and Clifford Richards and Paternal grandparents, Evelyn and Dewey Curtis.
One of a kind, Albert was a man of few words but many actions and let his actions speak for themselves. He was loved by many, will be greatly missed and never forgotten. God Bless and God Speed Albert L. Curtis Jr.
