Joseph “Neil” Johnson, 69, of South Elgin, passed away suddenly Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, Elgin.

Funeral Services were held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Rev. Jan Commerford officiating. Visitation was held prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Inspire Dreams, for children with Autism and Special Needs.

He was born May 17, 1948 in Penn Yan,  the son of Donald and Stella Pitcher Johnson. He was a graduate of Syracuse University with a degree in Civil Engineering and had been employed the Federal Aviation Administration for 38 years before retiring. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force.

He was Assistant Chief of Maintenance on the St. Lawrence Seaway for 5 years. He had been a resident of the South Elgin area most of his life and enjoyed volunteering in his community. He loved to fish and be in involved with his sons’ sporting teams.

Surviving are his wife, Saralee Conley Johnson, whom he married Nov. 6, 1971; two sons, Jason (Mandy) Johnson and Matthew Johnson; two sisters, Jill (Tim) Cuffe and Mary Jo Fair; and three brothers, Charles (Debbie) Johnson, Harold Johnson and Kim (Debbie) Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Dwight Johnson.
