5th Annual Dundee Winter Concert raises funds for Dundee Area Food Pantry

The 5th Annual Dundee Winter Concert series will feature Susie Burke and David Surette. Susie and David, share a unique musical chemistry. Together they have earned a reputation as one of the finest acts on the lively New England folk scene. Burkes’ vocal style is at once stunning and heartfelt, and is matched by Surette’s fluid fretwork. Roots Magazine notes that Surette’s bouzouki, guitar, and mandolin playing is exemplary. Scott Alarik of the Boston Globe writes “Susie Burke possesses one of the finest, purest, ballad sopranos heard in folk music today.”

Together since 1988, Susie and David have built a steady following for their own blend of contemporary, traditional and original folk music. Their diverse repertoire includes original compositions, blues, ragtime, swing, traditional roots and Celtic music all played with finesse, taste, and virtuosity.

In addition to her work for adult audiences, Susie Burke is an exceptional children’s performer and will be performing for the Dundee Elementary School for the Pre-K through third grade classes. She presents a program that is entertaining, educational, involving, inspiring, and of high musical caliber.

Children are encouraged to participate, with singing, clapping, call and response, and movement games.

Bob Sisbarro, organizer of the Winter Concert says,”We are lucky that both children and adults will be able to enjoy such talented musicians while they are here in Dundee.”

David Surette has been performing in the Maine Seacoast area since the mid-1980s, both with Susie and a number of other groups and musicians. He is well known as a top-notch accompanist in New England’s contra dance and Celtic music circles, and is also in demand as a studio musician. As a multi-instrumentalist, David brings a variety of stringed sounds to the duo. Sisbarro relates that “David can really tear it up on the mandolin and guitar when he wants to.” In addition to performing and recording, Surette maintains an active teaching schedule, and is head of the folk department at the Concord, N.H. Community School.

Susie and David have released five albums since 1990 on the Madrina Music label, to positive response from both critics and audiences. Their latest recording, a duo effort titled Waiting for the Sun, was released in 2015. Sisbarro says Susie and David are highly accomplished musicians who bring skill, taste, feeling, and pure enjoyment to their music. “We are fortunate indeed to have them here in Dundee,” he adds.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at the Dundee Baptist Church, 20 Seneca St., Dundee. Tickets are $10 at the door, and all proceeds from the tickets sales will go to the Dundee Food Pantry. Sisbarro thanks the sponsors who make the concert possible.
