Section V Class BBB Varsity Wrestling tournament was held Feb. 2 and 3 at Wayne High School in Ontario. Penn Yan Varsity Wrestling brought six team members to the tournament under the coaching of Theron Chinn and Jason Elliott. It is a small team in comparison to most of the schools competing, but the Mustangs showed grit and determination. When all was said and done, all six grapplers advanced, a feat none to small.

Senior Coty Bailey took home second place after a stellar performance, taking a tough loss in the championship round at 160 lbs.

Senior Nathan Elliott suffered an early loss, but battled all the way back to take third place at 152 lbs.

Senior Alvarez (Tito) Chavez edged out the field to take sixth place at 182 lbs.

It was a tournament of ups and downs for Junior Jarrod Calice, who dug in to take fourth place title at 138 lbs.

Freshman Damien Snyder was medically wavered into the tournament after not competing during the regular season due to injury. In an upset, he knocked out the second seed early on to wrangle in a fourth place finish at 126lbs.

Freshman Ayden Mowry battled tough in a bracket of talent and experience to bring home sixth place at 99lbs.

All Mustangs conveyed the pride and class that Penn Yan athletics is so well-known for.

The wrestling squad will travel to Section V Super Sectionals next Friday and Saturday at SUNY Brockport to compete for a spot in the State Wrestling tournament at the end of February.
