Penn Yan Boys net a big win heading into regular season final week

The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s basketball team kept their slim hope of a Finger Lakes East League championship title alive with a 56-52 victory over Newark on Friday evening in Penn Yan.  The Mustangs trail both Mynderse and Wayne for first place in the league, but they play both teams in the final week of action.  Mynderse and Wayne both have only 1 loss in league play.  Penn Yan enters the final regular season week with 3 losses in the league.  A possible tie for the top spot remains, but they would need some help from some other teams.

In Friday’s win over the Newark Reds, Penn Yan jumped out early to a 9-6 first quarter lead.  The Reds battled back and took the lead in the third quarter.  The game was tied 43-43 after three quarters.  The Orange and Blue used a 13-9 scoring advantage in the final stanza to pull away to the key win.  The Mustangs improved their overall record to 14-4 with the victory.  The Section V Class B tournament will start soon.  Every win is important for tournament seeding.

Desmond Battin led the Mustang scoring attack with 23 points.  He was a perfect 11 for 11 at the charity stripe.  Derrick Rivello added 14 points including a couple of key three pointers when the game was tied.  Dylan Stape chipped in 8 points while Ben Emerson tallied 5.  Cade Curbeau and Connor Fingar led a strong Penn Yan defensive effort.
