Beverly Seaton (Gettings) 83, of Alexandria, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark, Ohio Friday, February 9, 2018.

A private family memorial service will be held May 1.

Contributions can be made in Beverly’s name to the Granville Fire Dept. in Granville, Ohio.

Beverly was born May 1, 1934 in Penn Yan. She graduated from Penn Yan Academy; Keuka College, A.B.; Ohio State University, M.A. & Ph.D.

She taught English at Ohio State University in Newark from 1964-2000, specializing in 19th  century American literature and popular culture. Beverly’s specialty was the language of flowers. In 1995, the University of Virginia Press published her book, The Language of Flowers: A History as part of its Victorian Literature and Culture Series.

Beverly was a member of The United Church of Granville.

During her 47 years at her farmhouse in Alexandria, Bev acted as rescuer, protector, and “Mommy” to more than one hundred stray cats (typically, 20 or so at any one time!), many of them “wander-ins.”

She is survived by her loving foster son, Lee Hartsfeld; brother, John (Suzanne) Gettings of Penn Yan; nephew, Rick (Carol) Gettings of St. Louis, Mo., sister-in-law, Isabel (Karl) Ryavec of Pelham, Mass; nieces and nephews and many, many cousins; and her beloved cats who currently number 11.

She was preceded in death by John A. Seaton, husband; Diana Campbell, sister-in-law; and Miles Campbell, nephew; parents, Joseph and Alice Gettings; and John’s parents, Dr. John T. and Isabella Seaton.
