March 23, Johnson-Costello Post 355 celebrated the 99th birthday of the American Legion with a dinner and presentation of annual community awards.

The evening was hosted by Post 355 Commander, David Blauvelt, and honored public servants and volunteers who went above and beyond to make our community a better place to live.

EMT Brian Champlin of the Penn Yan Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps, is the EMT Volunteer of the Year; Sgt. Brandon DeHond, Penn Yan Police Department, is the Police Officer of the Year; First Sergeant Francis Ryan, Yates County Sheriff’s Department, is the Sheriff’s Officer of the Year; and Ryan Jensen, Penn Yan Volunteer Fire Department, is the Firefighter of the Year. The Post also presented Volunteer of the Year Awards to Frank Morris and Ralph McPherson for their many contributions to the Legion.

Yates County Veterans’ Service Officer Phil Rouin presented Volunteer of the Year Awards to Frank Morris and Dale Birdsall for dedicated service driving local veterans to medical appointments.Post members say, “Congratulations to all of the award winners and many thanks from Post 355 for all your outstanding service!”
