This year, the Penn Yan Theatre Company (PYTCo.) will stage “The Wizard of Oz” as its 40th anniversary summer musical production at the Penn Yan Academy Auditorium Aug. 10, 11 and 12. PYTCo. will be performing the more spectacular and technically complex RSC version of Frank L. Baum’s classic story, using as much of the aura of the 1939 MGM film as possible. Come join Dorothy and Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Cowardly Lion as they travel the land “over the rainbow!”
Co-directors Dusty Baker and Dave Smith will hold auditions from 6 to 9 p.m. June 12, 13, and 14 at the Penn Yan Middle School Auditorium. All ages and levels of experience are welcome to audition for leading roles and chorus, including children between the ages of 6 and 13 for the youth ensemble playing the Munchkins.
For your audition, please prepare a song to sing with confidence (not from Wizard), to deliver a brief monologue in character, and to dance a few simple steps. Please also bring a small photo of yourself and prepare a complete list of your schedule conflicts between June 18 and the show dates in August. Rehearsals are generally scheduled Mondays - Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m., but not all the cast will be required for every rehearsal.
The musical arrangements in the RSC version of Wizard provide opportunities for leading parts to shine, with excellent use of the four-part chorus and small vocal ensembles as well.
All the tunes from the film are included: Over the Rainbow, Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead, If I Only Had a Brain, If I Only Had a Heart, If I Only Had the Nerve, We’re Off to See the Wizard (Follow the Yellow Brick Road), the Jitterbug, and The Merry Old Land of Oz, Poppies, and If I Were King of the Forest.
Be a part of PYTCo’s 40th anniversary production by putting a smile on your face and everyone else’s with “The Wizard of Oz!”
