The Penn Yan Police Department was called to the Penn Yan Middle School at about 7:45 a.m. after a student found a live .22 caliber round in the school’s auditorium. The student notified staff, who searched the auditorium and found a second live .22 round
Penn Yan Police, Yates County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police responded to the school and conducted a search of the building and did not locate anything further.
The school was placed on lockdown during the search and was released to normal activities after the search concluded. Penn Yan Police Chief Tom Dunham noted there were events in the auditorium over the weekend, and it is not known who brought the ammunition into the school.
