Keuka Compass, the area’s LGBTQ+ social and advocacy group, announces events during June in recognition of Pride Month.
Events include classic and contemporary films, a book club reading and discussion of the graphic novel Honor Girl by Maggie Thrash, and another book club featuring the YA novel Simon versus the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. Her book is recognized as an important recent example of LGBTQ+ representation in media and was recently adapted into the major motion picture Love, Simon.
Albertalli will be in town for a book signing and presentation at 3 p.m. June 30. The community is invited to attend, whether or not they participate in the book club session.
“We’re lucky to have the author of such a timely and acclaimed piece of literature join us to help celebrate Pride Month,” said Dan Burner, Compass facilitator and rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Penn Yan.
All events will be held at Penn Yan Public Library at 214 Main St.
Keuka Compass formed in 2016 in response to requests from members of the LGBTQ+ community for greater social opportunities in the area. Since then, members have taken a leading role in providing education and advocacy throughout the Keuka Lake area, including presentations to educators and private organizations, film nights, and public information sessions. They meet the first Saturday monthly and encourage anyone to stop by. Find details at www.facebook.com/KeukaCompass/.
Pride Month “is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan.
