Yates County Sheriff Ronald Spike says the Arrowhead Road domestic violence victim who was brutally attacked in her home early Aug. 6 remains in guarded condition, and is on a ventilator at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

The 67 year-old woman was discovered unconscious and bleeding in the basement of her home after Yates County Deputies took Paul M. Khouzam, 37, of Branchport, into custody as he was walking on the road. Deputies also found a small dog that had been attacked and killed inside the house.

Khouzam was arraigned in Benton Town Court later that day on first degree burglary, first degree assault, and aggravated cruelty to animals. Yates County District Attorney Todd Casella says prosecutors are waiting until they are confident of the victim’s condition before proceeding with the case.

Khouzam was taken into custody the evening of Aug. 5 following a report that he was suicidal. Deputies transported him to Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital as a person needing mental health care. He was released from the hospital around 10 p.m. and returned to Branchport. He later went to the victim’s home and allegedly attacked the victim, whose identity is not being released.

Khouzam remains in the Yates County Jail.
