Ellis Harvey Tinney, 86, of Opelousas, La. died August 7, 2010 in the Heritage Manor or Opelousas.

Family and friends may call at the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, in the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel. Internment will follow in the Cedar Hill Cemetery of Washington.Rev. Perry Hubbs will officiate the service.

Mr. Ellis was born Dec. 14, 1923 to Frank A. Tinney and Alice Mae Ingram in the Potter Township. He graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1941. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1942. He was trained as a B-17 mechanic, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was then honorably discharged in February 1946.  

He married the former Ruby B. Shuff on July 28, 1946. He earned a B.S. degree at Northwestern State College in December 1951. He was employed by the Louisiana Department of Welfare in 1955 as a welfare investigator, 1957 a probation officer, 1959 a juvenile probation officer, 1965 an administrative assistant in the Food Stamp Program, 1969 vocational rehabilitation counselor for the blind.  In 1975 he served as President of the Louisiana Rehabilitation Association.  He was supervisor of Services for the Blind in Baton Rouge area until his retirement in June 1979.

He was a member of the Opelousas First Baptist Church and the American Legion Post of Washington, La. He was a carpenter and enjoyed doing woodworking and using his tools in the shop in his spare time.

He is survived by his two sons, Robert F. (Susan) Tinney of Washington, La; and Wilfred E. “Bill” (Linday Berryman) Tinney of Pearland, Texas; one brother-in-law, Lawrence Caward of Stanley; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Ruby B. Shuff Tinney; his parents, Frank A. Tinney and Alice Mae Ingram Tinney; one brother, Donald H. Tinney; and one sister, Norma J. Tinney Caward.
