Polly was born Pauline Claire Pettyjohn on May 22, 1925 in Alma, Michigan. Her parents were Clarence and Henriett Balcezak Pettyjohn. In the mid-1930s, the family moved to Elmira, where Polly attended public schools and graduated from Elmira Free Academy. She was a 1947 graduate of Elmira College, returning to campus three decades later to take a course in children’s literature.
Polly met her future husband, John Sheridan of Penn Yan, at a Keuka College dance on a blind date arranged by her older sister, Fran, and her good friend, Shirley Eckert Hosking, John’s cousin, who were Keuka students.
Polly and John were married June 25, 1947 in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Elmira. She taught history at Trumansburg High School for a year. The couple lived at Cornell University, where their first two children were born, while John completed his undergraduate work and his law degree at Cornell Law School. They spent summers at the
Sheridan cottage on Keuka Lake, moving to Penn Yan in 1952 when John joined his father’s law practice.
The mother of seven children, Polly had many interests. The couple were avid readers, and reading gave Polly great pleasure throughout her life. She loved libraries, especially the Penn Yan Public Library, and she served a member of the Library’s Board of Trustees helping to raise funds for the new library addition built in 1982. She belonged to several clubs over the years, including the American Association of University Women. She was a member of St. Michael’s Church.
Polly loved to travel. For years, she had a large world map on the wall and a world atlas within easy reach. Other interests included her bridge groups and morning coffee group, music, miniatures, watching birds, needlepoint, tennis and golf, and following world and national news. She especially loved summers on Keuka Lake.
Polly’s husband, John, of 37 years, passed away Aug. 2, 1984. On Aug. 11, 1991 at St. Michael’s Church, she was married to John J. Hyland who passed away May 16, 2003.
