Leo Francis Hafer, 92, of Branchport, passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the Fred & Harriett Taylor Health Center in Bath.
Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18 at the Townsend Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan. His funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Jeff Childs officiating. Interment will be held at the Branchport Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Leo’s memory to the Penn Yan United Methodist Church, 166 Main St., Penn Yan, N.Y. 14527.
Leo was born April 25, 1925 in Albia, Iowa to the late Zadia and Ulysses S. Grant Hafer. He graduated from Albia High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Leo was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, serving in post-war Japan, and was then remobilized as a Reservist to support pre-deployment training for the Korean conflict. He was a chief lineman for NYSEG in Corning, and retired after 39 years. He was a member of the Penn Yan United Methodist Church, the Penn Yan Moose Club, the Johnson-Costello American Legion and the VFW in Penn Yan.
Leo is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joan E. Thomas Hafer; sons, Gregory (Brenda) Lee, Jeffery (Bonnie) Lee, and Barry (Michelle) Lee; grandchildren, Courtney, Kiersten, Ashleigh, Barry Jr. (Mallorie), Brittany (Nicholas) Glaze, and Christopher (Ashley); and his great-grandchildren, Victor, Penelope, and Hunter Lee; as well as, several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
