Mary Knapton, 92, formerly of Clyde, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the Homestead of Soldiers and Sailors in Penn Yan.
Friends called from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, March 19 at the Weldon Funeral Home, Main St., Penn Yan. A celebration of Mary’s life followed at 11 a.m. Dr. Terry Robertson, Executive Director-Treasurer of the Baptist Convention of N.Y. officiated.
Mary was born in Penn Yan, daughter of the late Leo and Josephine Sutherland Orsley, July 25, 1925.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her sister, Ellen Morgan.
Mary is survived by her husband, Dr. Roger Knapton of 75 years, married Aug. 2, 1942. She and Roger dedicated their lives to many ministry opportunities here in the states and abroad. Their most recent ministry was starting the Clyde Baptist Church in 2005. In addition to being an accomplished soloist, educator, adult Bible teacher, church clerk, and youth leader, Mary had several other accomplishments. Mary graduated from John Brown University with Summa Cum Laude; President of Women’s Missionary Union of the Baptist Convention of N.Y.; Vice President of the Women’s Missionary Republican Party of N.Y. State; Distinguish Woman of the Year, Broome County Republican Club, Binghamton, N.Y.; Trustee of Carver School of Missions, Southern Baptist Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky.
Mary penned in her personal biography, “I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior on June 2, 1944. My marriage and conversion are two of my greatest experiences of my life.” Mary taught by the way she walked and by the way she lived her life.
