LANE RODNEY BRIGGS

DUNDEE — Lane Rodney Briggs Sr., 73, of Dundee, formerly of Rehoboth, Mass., died Tuesday March 4, 2008 in the comfort of his son’s home, surrounded by his loving family.


Honoring his wishes there were no prior calling hours.  A funeral service was held at 10:30 am Wednesday March 5, at the Bath Veterans Administration Chapel with Chaplin Gerald Hamblin officiating.  Burial with full Military Honor’s followed in Bath National Cemetery.

Lane was born April 10, 1934 in Attleboro, Mass., the son of Henry and Marion Pullen Briggs.  He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1956.  On Jan. 2, 1954 in Andover, New Brunswick, Canada he married the former Shirley C. O´Clair.  He received his bachelor’s degree from Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo.; and became an ordained Baptist minister which he practiced part-time ever since college. 


Lane retired from his life’s work of over 30 years as proprietor of Lane´s Auto Repair, in Attleboro, Mass. in 1999.  He and his wife have lived locally since May of 2007, previously of Rehoboth, Mass.  He will be remembered for his love of auto restoration, home repair and restoration and the joy of spending time with his family.


He is survived by his wife of 54 years Shirley C. Briggs at home; one son David L. (Carol) Briggs with whom he made his home; two daughters Debra S. Bingham of Fall River, Mass., and Cheryl (Peter) Santos of McCallen, Texas; a brother Henry (Lillian) Briggs; and a sister Judith (Charles) King both of Mansfield, Mass; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.


He was pre-deceased by his grandson Gary Cunningham of McCallen, Texas.

IONA CHAPMAN

NAPLES — Iona Chapman, 88, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2008.


Family and friends called from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, march 9 at the Baird-Moore Funeral Home in Naples. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 10 at the Ingleside Christian Church, in Ingleside.

Born Sept. 2, 1919 in Prattsburgh to Glenn and Thelma Gibson Graves. She was the town clerk of the Town of Italy, member of Ingleside Christian Church, Family Ministries of Kanona and a member of Gideon’s International.


She is survived by her children, Dawn (Warren) Lennon of Taylor, S.C.; Hugh (Lori) Chapman of Naples, Gary (Doris) Chapman of Naples, Gene (Candy) Chapman of Naples, and Dorian (Susan) Chapman of Webster and Naples; 16 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Muriel Graves King and Harriet Chapman; many nieces and nephews.


She was predeceased by her husband, Marshall Chapman and a brother, Calvin Graves.

GEORGE F. GILLARD

TULSA — George F. Gillard, III, 63 of Tulsa, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008.
 Memorial Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Resurrection Catholic Church. Family suggests contributions may be made to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Oklahoma, 3015 E. Skelly Dr. Tulsa, Okla. 74105.


He is survived by his wife, Kay Gillard, one daughter, Carrie Stiles, brother, John Gillard, Rochester,  four sisters, Sarah Mitchell, Springhill, Fla., Ellen Gillard, Hampton, Va., Kathleen Gillard, Medford, Ore., Mary Nielsen of Owasso, Okla. and two grandchildren.


He was born April 28, 1944 to George and Mary Gillard, II in Fulton. Gillard’s career in education began in 1975 when he was hired by the Sawyer Schools as an Admissions Representative. Two years later, he moved to Minneapolis, Minn. to start on the first long distance branches in the history of accreditation As Director of Marketing, he was responsible for both the New York and Minnesota campuses, as well as overall operation of the Minnesota branch.


In 1979 he founded Platt College in Tulsa, a branch of one of the oldest business schools west of the Mississippi. Two years later he established an additional campus in Oklahoma City, Okla. In March 2000, he acquired the School of Technical Training in Lawton, which is now known as Platt College Lawton. As sole owner and Chief Executive Officer of Oklahoma’s Platt College Schools, he was responsible for overseeing over 100 employees serving 1,000 students in a variety of different career fields such as medical, dental, drafting, commercial art, and nursing.


He was a member of the Region VI Proprietary Advisory Council Board Member, Oklahoma Board of Private Vocational Schools; ACCSCT Team Leader for Accreditation and Career College Association.


Mr. Gillard was politically active in various state and federal levels of concerns dealing with education.


In December of 2000, Mr. Gillard retired and spentmuch of his time still committed to the proprietary school sector through political and professional involvement.

ELEANOR MC COY

PRATTSBURGH — Eleanor McCoy, age 93, of Thornapple Hill Rd. Extension, died Sunday March 9, 2008 at the Living Center South in Geneva.


Friends may call Saturday March 15 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral Home in Gorham. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Number Nine Cemetery.


Eleanor loved animals and her family. She gave hugs and kisses to all who loved her.
She is survived by her caregivers, Kim and Nevin Benedict; and their family, Adam (Kayla) Benedict and Cory Benedict; and Kim’s mother, June Colf.
