William D. Galliher, 84, of Penn Yan, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at the Canandaigua Veteran’s Medical Center in Canandaigua.

Friends and family may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18 at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 19 at St. Michael’s Church, Liberty St., Penn Yan. Interment will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the VA, c/o Voluntary Services, Building 8A, 400 Fort Hill Ave., Canandaigua, NY  14424 or to St. Michael’s School, 214 Keuka St., Penn Yan, NY  14527.

Bill was born on May 16, 1925 in Oneida, the son of  Charles and Merle (Damon) Galliher. Bill was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.  He was a graduate of Ithaca College and received his Masters Degree from Syracuse University. Bill taught at Penn Yan Academy for 32 years prior to his retirement in 1985. Bill was a parishioner of St. Michael’s Church in Penn Yan and a life member of the Johnson-Costello American Legion Post 355 and the Penn Yan VFW Post 745. His favorite hobby was woodworking and he will be most remembered for teaching driver’s education at Penn Yan Academy. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

William is survived by his children, Gretchen Galliher, Anne (Kevin) Brennan, Kathy Galliher, Marnie (Butch) Campney, Tina Galliher, Tom (Mary Ann) Galliher, and Mary (Steve) Wheeler; grandchildren, Brian (Kate) Breuer, Kevin (Adrienne) Breuer, Shawna (Kris) Wilber, Damon “Deke” Brennan (Kerry Hallings) and Ashley Brennan; great-grandchild Jackson Wilber; sister, Jean Wendell; brother, Chuck (Frieda) Galliher; sister-in-law, Colleen Dempsey; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Chris and his brother-in-law, Jack Wendell.
