Claude F. Crippen Jr., 90, of Penn Yan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Homestead Nursing Home in Penn Yan.
Friends and family may call from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 8, 2010 at St. Michael’s Church, Liberty St., Penn Yan. Interment will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Penn Yan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to the Reigning Cats & Dogs, RCAD, PO Box 176, Dresden, NY 14441 or to the Ontario-Yates Hospice, 756 Pre-Emption Rd., Geneva, NY 14456.
Claude was born on April 3, 1919 in Penn Yan, the son of Claude F. and Susan (Nickerson) Crippen, Sr. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from Michael Sterns Clothing in Penn Yan. He was a member of the Johnson-Costello American Legion Post #355, a member and Steward for 10 years of the Penn Yan V.F.W. Post 745, and a member of the Penn Yan Moose Club.
Claude is survived by his wife, Mary Drost Crippen; his children, Ann (Donald) Nolan of Canandaigua and Marian (Larry) Strickland of Penn Yan; two grandchildren, Andrew and Mary Nolan; nephew, John Burnside of Elmira; brothers-in-law; Harry and John Drost of Shortsville. In addition to his parents, Claude was predeceased by his sisters, Helen (Lenny) Burnside and Madeline (Charles “Dutch”) Arton.
