Jane E. "Betty" Strong, 94, of Penn Yan, died Sunday August 22, 2010 in the safety and comfort of her home.
Honoring her wishes there will be no prior calling hours. A graveside memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family, in Grove Mount Cemetery, Himrod.
Those wishing may make contributions in her memory to charity of their choice.
Jane was born Jan. 24, 1916 in Hornell, the daughter of Rollin W. and Mattie Clark Thacher. She graduated from Hornell High School in 1935; and from Schauffler College now Oberline College, in Cleveland, Ohio with a B.S. Degree in Social Work in 1940. She continued her education, receiving her B.A. in Sociology in 1956, from West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va.; with graduate work at SUNY Cortland.
On June 14, 1947 in Hornell, she married Joseph N. Strong. He passed away on Dec. 10, 1993. A life long area resident, Jane and her husband owned and restored the Rose Hill Mansion from 1958-1966, and continued to reside there until 1981, when they moved to a farm they owned on Long Point Road on the west side of Seneca Lake.
Mrs. Strong was an Elementary fifth grade teacher in Romulus, for many years. She also operated her own “Achievement Center” for children with perceptual difficulties in Geneva; and for 10 years prior to her retirement in 1978; she was a Social Worker at Genesee Hospital in Rochester.
Mrs. Strong was a former member of the Unity Church in Syracuse, and a Charter member of the Trail Blazers Organization in Penn Yan.
She is loved and will be dearly missed by two sons David T. (Jeanne) Strong of Pittsford, John Longcoy Strong with whom she made her home, and lovingly cared for her the past 11 years; a daughter Constance “Connie” (William) Serrett of Penn Yan; four grandchildren Lauren (Scott) Glick of Geneva, Adam Serrett of Penn Yan, Mackenzie and Jacqueline Strong both of Pittsford; a sister Margaret H. (Robert) Lorenzen of Dryden and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by an infant grandson Jeremy Thacher Strong in 1988, and a sister, Catharine W. Smith in 2006.
