DONALD E. ALLEN
PENN YAN / DUNDEE — Donald E. Allen, 88, of Penn Yan, previously of Dundee, formerly of Tyrone, died Sunday February 22, 2009 at the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home.

Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24 at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water St., Dundee where a Masonic Service will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a funeral service with Rev. Anitra Price officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee.

The family respectfully requests no flowers, and graciously asks that memorial contributions in Don's memory be made to the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home, 655 N. Liberty St. Penn Yan, NY 14527 or the Dundee Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, NY, 14837.

Donald was born Oct. 28, 1920 in town of Barrington,  the son of Edward R. and Helen DeCamp Allen. He graduated from Dundee Central School in 1939. On Jan.17, 1942 in Dundee, he married the former Doris Eleanor Kenyon. She passed away on June 26, 1980. A life long area resident, he was employed as a truck driver, and heavy equipment operator for the town of Tyrone Highway Dept., retiring as the Superintendant of Highways in 1980. He had previously worked for 14 years for Home Gas Company, as well as working for a short time at Mercury Aircraft, Seneca Foods, and Dundee Central School.

Mr. Allen was a 64-year member and past Master of the Lamoka Masonic Lodge #463 F&AM; a former Deacon of the Weston Prebyterian Church and a former Town of Tyrone Assessor. In his spare time he enjoyed farming and raising sheep.

He will be missed by two sons, Lauren "Corky" (Rose) Allen of Himrod, and Michael (Jody) Allen of Painted Post, a daughter Rebecca Jane Reilly of Marietta, Ga., a brother, John Robert "Bob" (Betty) Allen of the town of Tyrone, a sister Erma C. (Merle) Peck of Painted Post; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; long time friend and companion Geraldine Meacham and several nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Cleland Allen in 1991, Lauren Allen in 1997, and a son-in-law Richard C. Reilly Jr. in 2005.

RODNEY R. GREEN
GORHAM- Rodney R. Green, 58, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 15, 2009, at Geneva General Hospital.

Calling hours were held on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at the Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral Home in Gorham. A funeral followed at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor William Reigle of the Phelps Baptist Church officiated. Burial was in Gorham Cemetery. A reception was held at the Gorham Firehouse following the service.

Rodney was born in Canandaigua, the son of Clifford W. and Louise Hall Green. He enjoyed watching TV, movies, riding his bike, sawing wood and fixing lawnmowers.

Rodney is survived by his sisters, Jane Green of Stanley, Sandy (Alvin) Ryder of Clifton  Springs, Linda (Milton) Skyner of Canandaigua and Dolly Green of Rushville; brothers, David of Stanley, Don (Debbie) of Penn Yan and Doug Green of Hilton and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rodney was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Green and Frances Coleman; and brothers, Clifford, Charles and Robert Green.

LAVERNE JENS "VERN" HANSEN
GENEVA — LaVerne Jens “Vern” Hansen, 90, of 5317 Pre-Emption Road, Geneva died Wednesday, February 18t 2009 at the MM Ewing Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua.

Friends and family may call at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 East Elm St., Penn Yan on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the Bellona Memorial Presbyterian Church in Bellona.  Interment in Bellona Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Vern’s name to Thompson Hospital, MM Ewing Continuing Care Center, Rosewood Avenue, 350 Parrish St., Canandaigua, NY  14424.

Vern was born in Geneva on Oct. 16, 1918, the son of Chris and Laura Hansen.  He was a successful farmer all his life, first leading the Hansen family farm on Pre-Emption Road and later forming V&W Farms with his son, Wayne.  He was also a member and former trustee of the Bellona Memorial Presbyterian Church, the treasurer of the Bellona Cemetery Association for 18 years, and a member of the Bellona Fire Department.  Vern was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Arlene F. Hansen, on May 2, 1999.

He is survived by his friend, Fran Hinson of Penn Yan; son, Wayne Hansen of Geneva; daughter  Kay (Richard) Moore of Groton;  grandchildren, Michelle (Jason) Fortier, Gretchen (Eric) Curry, Tim Hansen, Jill Malcuria, Jason Moore, Jeffrey Hansen; four great grandchildren; brothers, Stewart Hansen of Horseheads, Henry (Dorothy) Hansen of Henrietta, Ed (Helen) Hansen Sr. of Stanley, and Chris (Sue) Hansen of Hall and numerous nieces and nephews.

BESSIE B. HIBBARD
PENN YAN — Bessie B. Hibbard, 95, of Penn Yan, died Tuesday, February 17, at Penn Yan Manor.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 at Weldon Funeral Home, East Main St., Penn Yan. a service will follow at 3 p.m. and Burial will be in Bitely Cemetery in Branchport.

Memorial Donations may be made to Penn Yan Manor, Yates COunty Humane Society or a charity of one's choice.

Bessie was born March 30, 1913 to Fred and Della Martin Burk. She is survived by two sons, Frederick Hibbard of Branchport and Leslie B. Hibbard of Geneva; two daughters, Doris Nesbit and Judith (Theodore) Zimmerman, both of Branchport; daughter-in-law Gwen Barr Hibbard of Geneva; 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandhildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bowen, in 1960; son-in-law Edwin R. Nesbit; sisters, Mabel (Bob) Alexander, Frances (Claude) Razey; brothers, Charles (Mary) Burk, Harold (Mildred) Burk; granddaughter Marjorie Nesbit Emerson and great-grandson Matthew Bowen Hibbard and several nieces and nephews.

M. JOSEPHINE (Jo) HOWLAND
PENN YAN — M. Josephine (Jo) Howland, 94, of Penn Yan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 19, 2009 after a brief illness.

Family and friends may call on Sunday, February 22 at Townsend Wood Funeral Home, East Elm St., Penn Yan. Josephine’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Feb. 23, at St. Michael’s Church, Liberty Street, Penn Yan. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Honeoye Falls.

Contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Church, 211 Keuka St., Penn Yan, NY 14527.  
Born in Mendon Center on November 23, 1914, Josephine was the eldest daughter of William and Gertrude (Henehan) Howe. On July 5, 1952, she married Verne G. Howland, becoming mother to Verne’s children, Kent (Lee) and Linda, whose mother had sadly passed away in 1951. Josephine and Verne had two daughters, Mary Ellen and Michele.

She was a graduate of Honeoye Falls High School in 1932 and earned her teaching degree at Brockport State College in 1936. She was active with her college alumni, even attending her 70th class reunion in 2006. From 1936 to 1946 she taught at the one-room Rural School #7 in Mendon Center, where she had been a student from 1920 to 1927.  She also taught at Rush Henrietta Central Schools and St. James School in the Diocese of Rochester.

Josephine lived in East Irondequoit from 1952 to 2003. During retirement, she enjoyed her winter home in Arcadia, Fla. In 2003, she moved to St. Mark’s Terrace in Penn Yan.  
Josephine was predeceased by her husband, Verne, in 1994, and her sister, Madeline McCall, in 2002.

She is survived by her children Kent Lee Howland (Annette Vafa) of Port Byron and Hollywood, Fla.; Linda Rauscher Metzger (Chris Metzger) of Naples; Mary Ellen Siebert (John Caporta) of Glenmont; and Michele Howland (Bill Banaszewski) of Penn Yan; as well as her grandchildren Mark (Sheila) Howland, Beth Howland, Lisa (Steve) Johnson, Tom (Dawn) Rauscher, Kristina Rauscher (Michael) Bianchi, Rebecca Rauscher-Bethlendy, M. Conrad (Dawn) Rauscher, Will (BJ) Siebert, and Brandon (Kailyn) Siebert; five great-grand children, two nieces and several cousins.

ALEXANDER C. "SANDY" MCFETRIDGE
PENN YAN- Alexander C. “Sandy” McFetridge, 85, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic.

A memorial service will be in the spring at a time and place to be announced.

Sandy requested memorial contributions be made to the Dresden United Methodist Church, 58 Cornelia St., Dresden, NY 14441.

Sandy was born in Bellona, the son of John and Helen Long McFetridge. He was a 1940 graduate of Geneva High School. He worked as a terminal manager for McBride Transportation in Arkport and then retired from Vernon Sales Promotion, home-based in Newton, Iowa. He was a member of the Penn Yan Moose Club and attended the Dresden United Methodist Church.

Sandy is survived by his brother, Herb (Lee) McFetridge of Stanley and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; his sister and brother-in-law, Mary (Henry) Olsen; and brother and sister-in-law, William (Irene) McFetridge.
Sandy entrusted the Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral Home in Gorham with these arrangements.

CARL J. SCHWARTZ SR.
MIDDLESEX — Carl J. Schwartz Sr. 69, of Middlesex, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 21, 2009, surrounded by family and friends, after months of fighting kidney cancer.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Crosswinds Wesleyan Church at 3360 Middle Cheshire Road in Canandaigua from 4 to 6 p.m., immediately followed by a memorial service.

Memorial gifts can be made to the LeTourneau Christian Camp and Conference Center, 4950 County Road 11, Rushville, NY 14544, in lieu of sending flowers or other gifts.

Carl was born in the Town of Gorham on Oct. 1, 1939, the son of the late Edward and Margaret Schwartz. He was a graduate of the Middlesex Valley Central School. He took his first job as a mechanic for Kennedy Automotive in Middlesex. He later married Darlene Marie Mitchell and together established their current home at 1185 Church St., Middlesex. They raised their four children, while being the youth directors for the Middlesex Baptist Church. Carl is remembered for having driven a church bus full of kids to Saturday evening youth rallies at Family Life Ministries in Kanona.

Carl worked for decades as a mechanic for the Marcus Whitman Schools, most of which he served as the head mechanic. He also worked on truck hoists with his wife’s now deceased great-uncle, Russell Hurlbutt, in Stanley.

Carl is survived by his wife of 49 years, Darlene Marie Schwartz; his four children, Yvonne (Leo) Campbell, Carlene (Clark) Kelsey, Carl Jr. (Kerri) Schwartz, and Quintin (Mary) Schwartz; grandchildren Lauren, Ryan, Aaron, Kaitlyn and Meghan Campbell; Samuel, Anna Laura, Prescott and Emma Danae Kelsey; Ruby Rose, Lily Pearl, Daisy Jewel and Thorn Sterling Schwartz, and Quintin Joel Jr. and Jacob Benjamin Schwartz, respectively.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral Home in Gorham.

LEONARD E. ''LENNY'' SMITH
DUNDEE—Leonard E. ''Lenny'' Smith, 49, of Dundee, died unexpectedly Monday February 23, 2009 at home.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday. Feb. 26 at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water St., Dundee; where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27 with Rev. Lucinda O´Leary officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Hillside Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dundee Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, NY 14837.

“Lenny” was born March 10, 1959 in Penn Yan, the son of Roland E. and Barbara J. Hess Smith Sr. He graduated from Dundee Central School in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army from 1978 to 1982, and for several years in the reserves.  He was  employed by Dundee Food´s L.L.C..  A member of the Dundee V.F.W. Goodrich-Smith Post #8649, and former member of Dundee American Legion Bradley-Jessop Post #660. An avid NASCAR, and Dallas Cowboy fan, Lenny also enjoyed Dirt Track Racing and was a former security guard at Black Rock Speedway.

He will be missed by a son Jeremy A. (Erica Campbell) Smith of Bellona;  daughters Monica S. (Paul Rosen) Smith of Syracuse and Kaitlyn A. Smith of Dundee; his parents Roland E. (Barbara) Smith, Sr. of Dundee; three grandchildren; the mother of his children, Dawn Fredericksen of Penn Yan; a sister Dorothy Ann (Stephen) McCann of Penn Yan;  brothers Roland E. (Glenda) Smith, Jr. of Himrod, Duane C. (Bernardine Rapacki) Smith of Elmira, Lyman W. (Emmie) Smith of Canastota, and Ross E. (Sandy) Smith of Dundee; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was pre-deceased by and infant brother Randy Smith in 1960.
 

ANNA J. SPRUSANSKY
DUNDEE — Anna J. Sprusansky, 96, of The Penn Yan Manor, died peacefully Thursday February 19, 2009 at Geneva General Hospitalin Geneva.

Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water St., Dundee; and from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23 at St. Joseph´s Roman Catholic Church, 207 Hayes Ave., Endicott, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. with Father Charles Opondo-Owora officiating.  Burial followed in Slovak Catholic Cemetery, in Binghamton.
Memorial contributions in Anna’s name may be made to St. Joseph´s Roman Catholic School 207 Hayes Ave. Endicott, NY 13760; or the Dundee Emergency Squad 12 Union St. Dundee, NY 14837.

Anna was born Jan.20, 1913 in Lansing, the daughter of Joseph and Julia Buchco Mahacek.
On Oct. 1, 1932 in Johnson City she married Anthony P. Sprusansky. He passed away on Feb. 22, 1970.  She worked in the Endicott & Johnson Shoe Factory, West Endicott Division for 34 years, retiring in 1978.

Mrs. Sprusansky was a lifetime member of St. Joseph’s Church.  She was a member of the Czechoslavak-Moravian Club, and the Johnson City Senior Center.
She moved to St. Mark’s Terrace in Dundee, in October 2002 and became a resident of the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home in October 2004.

Anna is survived by her son Donald G. (Jo Ellen) Sprusansky of Shelby, N.C.; daughter Martha M. Webster of Dundee; grandchildren Jim (Karen) Webster of Englewood, Fla., Jeff (Laura Champlain) Webster of Prattsburgh, Lisa (Carl) Berna of Dundee, Tina (Philip) Ramsey and Tim (Diann) Sprusansky both of Shelby, N.C.; 16 great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; a sister, Elizabeth Panatoski of Johnson City; numerous nieces and nephews and many “special friends”.

Besides her parents and husband, she was pre-deceased by her son-in-law Kenneth Webster, sisters Mary Gasparek, Rose Andel, and brother Joseph Mahacek; infant grandson Donnie Sprusansky, and infant great grandson Clay Ramsey.
