NORMAN L. AMMERMAN SR.
DUNDEE  —Norman L. Ammerman Sr., 77, of Dundee, died Saturday April 4, 2009 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday April 7 at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water St., Dundee,  where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday April 8 with the Rev. Lucinda O'Leary officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dundee Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, the Dundee New York State Police 16 Union St Dundee, NY 14837; or the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #2030, 301 East Elm St., Penn Yan, NY 14527.

Norman was born Oct. 8, 1931 in , Athens Pa., the son of the late Floyd and Hazel Bidlack Ammerman. He has lived in Dundee since 1978, previously of Penn Yan. A tractor trailor driver most all of his life, having driven for Frarey Land Farm, Penn Yan Express, and Marchionda Trucking, as well as others. He retired in 2003.

Mr. Ammerman was a member of the Penn Yan Moose Lodge #2030; and the Seneca Lake Duck Hunters. An avid county music fan with George Jones as his favorite musician, he enjoyed horse back riding and rodeos in his younger years.

He is survived by two sons, Charles N. (Anne) Ammerman of Penn Yan, Norman L (Wendy Barton) Ammerman Jr. of Dudley, Mass.; five daughters, Holly Kay (Robert) Hughes of Dunnellon, Fla., Roxann K. Ammerman of Victor, Kimberly J. (Charlie) Binder of Geneva, Brenda L. (Dean Easling) Ammerman of Penn Yan, Becky L. (Randy) Barton of St. Mary, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was pre-deceased by the mother of his children, Vivian Ammerman in 1981, and a daughter, Rena Marie Ammerman in 1954.

NORMA LIPTON BRAILOW
MARTINSVILLE, IND. — Norma Lipton Brailow, longtime resident of Penn Yan and Keuka Park, died Sunday, march 29 in Martinsville, Ind.

Burial will be in Keuka Park Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Keuka College in Norma's memory.

She was born April 30, 1916 to Leon Lipton and Estelle (Lakin) Lipton in New York City, where she graduated from high school, attended art school and worked as a fashion illustrator. She married Alexander Brailow in 1941 and they moved to Penn Yan in 1944. She graduated from Keuka College in 1963 and received her master's degree in English from SUNY Geneseo in 1970.

She taught English at Penn Yan Academy in the mid-1960s. She began her career as a sculptor in the early 1970s and worked until 2001. Her was was exhibited at Lightner Library at Keuka College, at the Yates County Arts Center and at Arnot Art Museum in Elmira.

CLARENCE L. “SONNY” DENCENBURG
PENN YAN/ALTAY — Clarence L. “Sonny” Dencenburg,  88, died Thursday April 2, 2009 at the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home.

There are no prior calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.   
Memorial contributions may be made to the Altay Baptist Church, 4289 Six Corners Rd. Dundee, NY  14837.

A life long resident of the Altay area, Clarence was born July 9, 1920 the son of the late Clarence and Lillian Wortman Dencenburg.

He had been retired for many years from the Ingersoll Rand, Painted Post, Division.  He was a member of the Lamoka Masonic Lodge 463 F&AM, the Watkins Glen Elks Lodge #1546 B.P.O.E..

He was a life-long member of Altay Baptist Church, where he held various council positions and volunteered his time for many church activities. “Sonny” was a skilled carpenter, ran his own sawmill and enjoyed making wooden toys.
He is survived by his sister-in-law Athlee Dencenburg, several nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren.

Clarence was predeceased by his wife Mary Catherine “Kit” Dencenburg; his stepson, Charles Pym; sisters, Marion Coon, Maude Pierce, Onalee Hall, Patricia Hendricks; brothers George Dencenburg, Paul Dencenburg and nephew, C. James Coon.
Arrangements are by the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee.

 

ROBERT H. DINEHART

PENN YAN — Robert H. Dinehart, 90, of Penn Yan, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Soldiers & Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan.

Family and friends may to call at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan on Wednesday, April 8 from noon to 2 p.m., where his funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Barbara Gifford officiating.  Burial will be at the Glenview Cemetery in Pulteney.

Robert was born in the Town of Jerusalem on Aug. 3, 1918, the son of Burt and Lillian (Finger) Dinehart. He worked  the Town of Jerusalem as the Highway Superintendent, Yates County Highway, A.L. Blades, Keeney Construction, and Streeters Road Construction as a heavy equipment operator, and trimmed grapes during the winter up until last year. In his spare time he loved to hunt, fish, play cards and enjoyed his garden. Bob belonged to the Branchport Methodist Church, the Seneca Lake Duck Hunters Club, and the Construction Union.

Bob is survived by his wife of 71 ½ years, Minnie Dinehart, children, Robert (Winnie) Dinehart, William (Dorothy) Dinehart, Wanda (Don) Schrouder, Roma (Keith) Lafler, grandchildren, Nancy (Gordon) Taylor, Timothy Dinehart, James Dinehart, Kim Dinehart, David (Shelly) Dinehart, Dennis Dinehart, Robin (Kevin) Johnson, Karen “Susie” (Jef) Bodine, Mike (Brandy) Schrouder, Bruce (Debbie) Lafler, and Barbie (Mike) Murphy, 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna Fox, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

NANCY T. FLYNN
PENN YAN  — Nancy T. Flynn, 73, of Penn Yan passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Rochester General Hospital.

Nancy was born in Waterloo on Feb. 26, 1936, the daughter of Edward and Alice Talbert. Nancy was a talented artist, wife, mother and grandmother. Nancy’s artwork was often donated to local churches and hospitals. Nancy will be remembered for her optimistic outlook, her smile and laughter and her homemade apple pies.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 48 years, Donald C. Flynn, children, Mike (Penelope) Flynn, Bill (Lisa) Flynn, and Alice Flynn, grandchildren, Taylor and Paige Flynn, father, Edward Talbert, sister-in-law Margaret Calder, brother-in -law, Patrick (Marilyn) Flynn, close cousins, Bev (George) Barnes, Barb (Tom) Dean and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

ANNABELLE J. METTLER
PENN YAN — Annabelle J. Mettler, 82, of Penn Yan died Tuesday, March 31 at home.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11 at Weldon Funeral Home, 102 East Main St., Penn Yan. Memorial contributions may be made to Ontario-Yates Hospice.

Annabelle was born July 10, 1926 in Corning, the daughter of Charles E. and Huldah M. Fish Davis. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a former Lady of the Moose. She is survived by three sons, Bernard (Charolotte) Ladd of Penn Yan, Darwin (Betty) Mettler of Campbell, Charles (Louise) Mettler of Colorado; a brother, William C. (Patricia) davis of COrning, two sisters, Idah Cortwright of Corning and Jean Knapp of Alaska; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

ELAINE E. SMITH

MIDDLESEX — Elaine E. Smith, 68, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 5, 2009.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 10 at the Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral Home in Gorham. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Nettle Valley Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Middlesex Valley Volunteer Ambulance, 817 Rte. 245, Middlesex, NY 14507; or to the Potter Fire Dept., 1255 Phelps Road, Middlesex, NY 14507.
Elaine was born in Auburn, the daughter of the late Everett and Esther Sarr Dixon. She loved bird watching, quilting, flowers, her garden and, most importantly, her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Allen L. Smith; four daughters, Pamela (Bruce) Merklinger, Kimberly (Steve) Sember, Denise Smith, and Anita (Bil) Kovacs; three grandchildren, Douglas Merklinger, Lauren Merklinger, and Amelia Sember; sister, Vivian (Alfred) Knapp; and several nieces and nephews.

PAULINE “POLLY” G. ROACH VALESKO
PORT ST. LUCIE, FLA. – Pauline B. Roach Valesko, 83, died on March 20, 2009.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial  at 10 a.m. Monday, April 13 2009 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Rushville. The Rev. Fr. Bob Ring will officiate. Burial will be in Overackers Cemetery, Town of Middlesex.

Pauline was born in Middlesex. She graduated from Middlesex Valley Central School in 1943, Freeman Business School in 1966, and Finger Lakes Community College, AAS Degree Cum Laude in 1978. She served as Town Supervisor in the Township of Gorham, Ontario County from 1983 to 1987.

The Governor of New York appointed her as a Trustee on the Board of Finger Lakes Community College in 1987. She served in the following organizations: Sonnenberg Gardens, Ontario County Democratic Committee, F.F. Thompson Hospital Guild, Canandaigua Lively Arts, American Legion Auxiliary (Gold Star Mother), Rosary Society, Memorial Art Gallery, Community Chest, Finger Lakes College Alumni Association, and Crystal Beach Betterment Association.

She moved to Ocala, Fla. in 1989, then to Port St. Lucie, Fla. in 1999.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas (Karen) Valesko of Seneca Castle; Stephen (Jacqueline) Valesko of Chesterfield, Va; daughter, Diann Detro of Vero Beach, Fla.; son-in-law Timothy Woodworth of Middlesex,; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; long-time companion Charles Marchese and beloved cat, Nugget.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Valesko, in 1989; son, Joseph Valesko III, killed in action in Vietnam in 1969, and posthumously awarded the Silver Star medal; and daughter, Paula Valesko-Woodworth in 1979.

Funeral arrangements are by the Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral Home in Gorham.
 

C. ALTON WASHBURN
PENN YAN — C. Alton Washburn, 77, of Penn Yan, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on Friday, April 3, 2009, with his loving family by his side.

Family and friends may call on Monday, April 6, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Townsend-Wood

Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St, Penn Yan, NY 14527. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Liberty St., Penn Yan, NY 14527. His interment will take place at St. Michael’s Cemetery in the future at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Alton’s honor to the Yates County Humane Society of Penn Yan.

Alton was born in Albion on July 9, 1931 to the late Clive Alton Sr. and Jessie A. (Babcock) Washburn. He began his career working construction in various capacities and went on to work with the New York State DOT for many years. As a man with a great sense of family pride, he loved watching his grandchildren play their sports.

He enjoyed taking his yearly extended vacations in Florida and was also a tremendous New York Giants fan.

Alton is survived by his children, Bonnie (Daniel) Barkley; Larry (Kim) Washburn; Tom (Denise) Washburn; and Ann (Charlie) Bush; grandchildren, Kyle and Ryan Barkley; Matthew, Alyssa and Dillon Washburn and Brianna and Jordan Bush; sisters, Betty Townsend-Cliff and Brenda (Gary) Babbitt; several nieces, nephews and cousins. His canine grandchildren, Riley and Noah, Teddy, Sadie, Cody, and Bella will sorely miss his companionship.

Alton always held close to his heart the memory of his wife, Margaret “Peg” Washburn, who passed before him in 2006, with whom he shared a loving and devoted union for over 50 years.
