Two long time retail establishments in Penn Yan and Dundee are marking special milestones this week. Earlier this year, other Penn Yan family businesses marked a special anniversary.
In Dundee, Giles Shurfine will close its doors to one era Saturday and open to another the following Monday, when Doug and Jackie Martini take over ownership of the business built by the Giles family over more than 60 years.
In Penn Yan, Longs’ Cards and Books celebrates its 40th anniversary of doing business in downtown Penn Yan, and earlier this year, Knapp & Schlappi and Marbles marked their 50th anniversaries.
Both communities have benefitted from these establishments - not just from the goods they offer and the retail traffic they help create. Each has been managed by families who have shown as much commitment to community as to business. Giles Shurfine has donated thousands of dollars to the Dundee Central School over more than 20 years and community organizations have long benefitted from the proceeds earned through bake sales held inside the store, often “competing” with the store’s products.
In Penn Yan, Jim and Gloria Long, their family and employees have been among the leaders in downtown Penn Yan retail organizations in addition to being active in local business, economic development and educational efforts.
Knapp and Schlappi supports organizations and activities as well. So does Paul Marble, who also serves on area boards.
Both communities are better places to live, work and shop thanks to the hard work of the families who have built these businesses and others like them.
Doug Martini says many of the traditions begun by the Giles family will continue in Dundee under his family’s ownership. And as long as there are businesses like Longs, Knapp & Schlappi, Marbles, Pinckney’s and others in the area, there will be anchors for community activities.
The best thing is that these aren’t the only local business families to elevate our community spirit. There are many more who have been opening their doors every day for years, ready to welcome your business and support your group.
We hope all readers will take a moment to thank the local businesss people who provide not just the goods and services we need from day to day, but the jobs, tax base and contributions to build a better community in many more ways.
Thank you for your business!
