Penn Yan, Marcus Whitman post wins; Dundee falls in OT
With a new school year about to start on Tuesday, all three local high school football teams jumped into action over the Labor Day weekend. The Penn Yan Mustangs romped over Pal-Mac 60-0 in a Finger Lakes East matchup in Penn Yan Sept. 1. The Marcus Whitman Wildcats also enjoyed a successful opening night, defeating tri-Town 38-36. Saturday afternoon in Dundee, the Scots dropped a disappointing 8-0 decision to Lyons in overtime. This was the Finger Lakes West League opener for both teams.
Penn Yan 60 Pal-Mac 0
The Penn Yan Mustang football team opened their 2017 season in a resounding way, with a 60-0 drubbing of the Pal/Mac Red Raiders in Penn Yan Friday night. The Orange and Blue used a 35-0 run in the second quarter to quickly put this contest out of reach. The win gives the Mustangs a 1-0 record in the Finger Lakes East. Pal-Mac starts out 0-1.
Mustang quarterback Will Rogers had a huge opening night performance, throwing for 250 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also ran for another 41 yards and tallied two more touchdowns. Rogers also had an interception on defense. Senior Desmond Battin ran a punt back for a touchdown and had two key pass receptions of 44 yards each. Teammate Dylan Stape had 4 catches for 144 yards and a touchdown. He also made 11 tackles and had a sack on defense. Conner Fingar also registered a 24 yard touchdown reception. Fingar also led the Mustang defense with 14 tackles. Joining the wild Mustang pass reception parade was sophomore Brennan Prather with 2 catches for 38 yards and a touchdown. Kyle Ingerick also grabbed a 43 yard touchdown pass.
As impressive as the high-powered opening night Mustang offense was, the Orange and Blue defense was equally as impressive, shutting out the visiting Red Raiders. Jakob Lass recorded 10 tackles, one sack, and had a fumble recovery. Andrew Garren made 5 tackles and recovered a fumble. Also notching 5 tackles each was Riley Brittingham, Nick Irwin, and Kyle Berna. Rounding out an outstanding defensive performance was Dominic Ferlito with 3 tackles and Jon Droney 2 tackles. Corey Fulmer and Lucas Paige notched one tackle each. It was a truly impressive opening night for both the Mustang offense and defense. They will travel to Wayne Friday night to take on the Eagles in another Finger Lakes East tilt.
Marcus Whitman 38 Tri-town 36
Marcus Whitman enjoyed a successful night running the ball Sept. 1 The Wildcat offense calked up 415 yards on the ground and scored 6 rushing TDs enroute to a 38-36 opening night win over Tri Town. Whitman's Dylan Howell ran for 142 yards while Jake Hill added 128 yards. Freshman Austin Smith rumbled for 60 yards and scored a touchdown. Teammate Austin Webster added 45 yard rushing. Wildcat quarterback Parker Smith added 15 yards and scored 2 touchdowns. Riley McLoud had two pass receptions.
Marcus Whitman is 1-0 in the Finger Lakes West with the win. They will play Finney on Friday night.
Lyons 8 Dundee 0 OT
The Dundee Scots opened their 2017 Finger Lakes West schedule with a disappointing 8-0 overtime loss to Lyons Sept. 2 in Dundee. The contest was a classic defensive battle with neither team able to score in regulation time. Dundee had a couple of excellent chances to score, including one with just 45 seconds left in regulation. The Scotsmen drove the ball inside the Lyons 10 yard line two times. But the Lyons defense stonewalled the Scots both times, keeping the game even. Lyons scored on a 7-yard run in overtime to pick up the win.
Dundee's Billy Bowers rushed for over 100 yards but could not dent the goal line. Sam Richards, Ryan Pryor, Cameron Denmark, Preston Cole, Austin Brace, and Preston Cratsley led a solid defensive effort by the Scotsmen. Dundee opens with a 0-1 record. They will travel to Shortsville to play Red Jacket Friday night.
