Penn Yan 3 M. Whitman 2

In a closely contested match Sept. 11 in Penn Yan, the hometown Mustang girls defeated Marcus Whitman 3-2. Penn Yan’s third doubles team of Claire Pullen and Sam Denson rallied to defeat Whitman’s Brandi Johnson and Kayleigh Hight 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to pick up the decisive team point and give Penn Yan the team win. In singles action, Penn Yan’s Shelby Woodard defeated Whitman’s Alaina Dhondt, while Molly Pullen scored a straight set Penn Yan victory over Caty Goodman in the 3rd single contest. Marcus Whitman’s Rebecca Frarey defeated Penn Yan’s Jenna Curbeau 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the 1st single match. Whitman’s doubles team of Jane Snaith and Danielle Anderson defeated Penn Yan’s team of Grace Worth and Abby Heselton for the other Wildcat team point.

Marcus Whitman 4 Newark 1

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat girl’s tennis team scored a 4-1 victory over Newark in a Finger Lakes East match played in Newark Sept. 15. Alaina Dhondt picked up a victory for Whitman in her singles match. The Wildcat doubles teams of Caty Goodman/Kaitlyn Hopper and Brandi Johnson/Camry Semans also recorded wins. Whitman’s fourth team point came by way of a forfeiture.

Naples 3 M. Whitman 2

The Naples Big green girl’s tennis defeated Marcus Whitman 3-2 Sept. 14 in Gorham. Alaina Dhondt recorded a victory for Whitman in her singles match.

Penn Yan 5 Bloomfield 0

The Penn Yan Mustang girl’s tennis shutout Bloomfield 5-0 in high school tennis action last week. Lexi Marble, Shelby Woodard, and Grace Worth swept the singles matches for Penn Yan. The Mustang doubles teams of Jenna Curbeau/Claire Pullen and Abby Heselton/Sam Denson also scored victories for the Orange and Blue.

The Penn Yan Mustang girl’s tennis team shutout Newark 5-0 in Finger Lakes East League action Sept. 13 in Newark. Jenna Curbeau paced the Penn Yan win with a straight set victory in her singles match. Shelby Woodard also scored a victory in her singles match, as did the Orange and Blue double team of Claire Pullen and Lexi Marble.

M. Whitman 5 Midlakes 0

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat boy’s soccer team defeated Midlakes 5-0 in local high school boy’s soccer action Sept. 14 in Gorham. Dominick Morey scored 2 goals and added an assist for the victorious Wildcats. Timmy Cornish, Jonathan Donovan, and Nevin Walters also scored goals for Whitman. Cornish, Donovan, Gage Swartele, and Ian Bator also recorded assists in this game for MW. Four first half Whitman goals put this game out of reach for the hometown Screaming Eagles.

Waterloo 3 M. Whitman 2

In Waterloo Sept. 16, the hometown Indians edged Marcus Whitman 3-2. Dominick Morey and Caleb McDonough tallied the Wildcat goals. Zach Payne recorded 10 saves in goal for Whitman.

S. S.-Romulus 9 Dundee 4

In other local high school boy’s soccer action last week, South Seneca/ Romulus defeated Dundee 9-4 in Ovid Sept. 14.

Livonia 5 Penn Yan 0

The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s soccer team was shut out by Livonia 5-0 Sept. 16. The contest was played at the Cohocton soccer complex in North Cohocton.

Marcus Whitman 3 Midlakes 2

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat girl’s soccer team recorded a close 3-2 victory over Midlakes Sept. 14 in Phelps. Emily Thompson, Emily Paddock, and Nichaela Commisso tallied the Whitman goals. Emily Thompson added 2 assists while Ari Beverly recorded a helper on the other Whitman goal. Katrina Meyer recorded 11 saves in goal for the Wildcat girls.

Marcus Whitman 3 Red Jacket 2

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat girl’s soccer team defeated Red Jacket 3-2 in Shortsville Sept. 13 in a Finger Lakes West contest. Whitman’s scoring was handled by Nichaela Commisso. She scored all three Wildcat goals in this tilt. Charlotte Alvord and Ari Beverly registered assists. Katrina Meyer recorded 14 saves in the nets for the Wildcats.

In other local high school girl’s soccer action last week, Honeoye shutout Penn Yan 2-0 in Honeoye Sept. 15. Melanie Gleason had 20 saves in goal for Penn Yan.

In other local girl’s soccer action Sept. 13, Newark shutout Penn Yan 3-0 in a Finger Lakes East game played in Newark.

Dundee 0 Hammondsport 0

The Hammondsport Lakers and Dundee Scot girl’s soccer teams battled to a scoreless tie in Hammondsport Sept. 15. Karyanna Rutledge had 13 saves in goal for Dundee.

Naples 6 Dundee 0

Dundee fell to Naples 6-0 in a FL West game played in Naples. Karyanna Rutledge had 16 saves in goal for Dundee.

Marcus Whitman 7 Dundee 1

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat girl’s soccer team defeated Dundee 7-1 Sept. 11 in Gorham. Emily Thompson scored 3 goals and added 2 assists to pace the Wildcat offense. Nichaela Commisso added 2 goals and 2 assists for Whitman. Emily Paddock chipped a goal and 2 assists while teammate grace Blankenship added a goal. Cheyenne Cummings scored Dundee’s lone goal. Makayla Selvek stopped 3 shots in goal for Marcus Whitman. Karyanna Rutledge recorded 8 saves for Dundee.

Wayne 5 Penn Yan 1

The Wayne Eagle girl’s soccer team defeated Penn Yan 5-1 in a Finger Lakes East League match played in Penn Yan Sept. 11. No statistics were posted for Penn Yan in this contest.

Cross Country

Wayne Invitational

Cross Country runners from Penn Yan and Marcus Whitman competed in the Wayne Eagle Invitational meet in Wayne Sept. 16. This invitational meet featured some of the top cross country runners from around the state. There was 3 separate divisions for both boys and girls and included dozens of high school cross country programs.

Marcus Whitman’s Gabe Stash was the best local finisher, coming in 10th in Division 3. Teammate Liam Prendergast finished in 33rd place while another Wildcat runner came in 38th place. Penn Yan’s Ben DeMoras came in 29th place. Out of the 20 schools competing in the Division 3 classification, Marcus Whitman finished in 9th place while Penn Yan came in 14th.

In the girl’s race in Division 3, Penn Yan’s Maci Nicholson finished in 21st place while 9th graders Jaine Doyle and Gracie Murphy finished in 45th and 62nd respectively. Allie Harford was Marcus Whitman’s best finisher, coming in 93rd place.

Red Jacket Invitational

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat boy’s cross country team finished in 3rd place in the Red Jacket Invitational Meet last week. The multi-school meet featured teams from Penfield, Honeoye, Greece Arcadia, Red Creek, Williamson, Clyde-Savannah, Marcus Whitman, and Red Jacket. For the Wildcat harriers, Gabe Stash finished in 2nd place overall. Liam Prendergast came in 13th, while Aiden Court and Kaden Kays finished in 27th and 28th place respectively.

The Marcus Whitman girl’s team finished in 7th place. Allie Harford finished in 23rd place for the Wildcats. Lauren O’Connor finished in 28th place and Emma MacDowell came in 39th.


Wayne 3 Penn Yan 0

The Penn Yan Mustang girl’s volleyball team hosted Wayne in a Finger Lakes East contest Sept. 14. The visiting Eagles shut out the hometown Mustang girls 3-0 in this contest. Wayne remained undefeated with the win and sports a perfect 4-0 record. Penn Yan falls to 3-2 with the loss. Emily Wunder recorded 10 kills, 4 aces, and 16 digs for Penn Yan. Teammate Sydney Bloom added 7 kills and 10 digs.

Penn Yan 3 Bloomfield 0

The Penn Yan Mustang girl’s volleyball team defeated Bloomfield in all three matches, 25-14, 25-17, 25-15) to score a 3-0 victory in a non-league contest played in Bloomfield on Tuesday. The victory improved Penn Yan’s season record to 3-1.

Emily Wunder contributed 9 aces, 11 kills, and 6 assists to the Mustang winning numbers. Sydney Bloom added 6 kills and 10 assists.

Penn Yan 3 Campbell-Savona 0

The Penn Yan Mustang volleyball team shutout Campbell-Savona 3-0 in a non-league contest Sept. 11. Jossie Decker had 4 services aces for Penn Yan. Emily Wunder contributed 6 assists, 7 kills, 11 assists, and 2 blocks to the Penn Yan winning numbers. Sydney Bloom had 11 kills and 5 assists. Penn Yan improves their season record to 2-1 with the victory.


Wayne 274 Penn Yan 279

The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s golf team dropped a close 274-279 decision to Finger Lakes East foe Wayne at the Wayne Hills Country Club Sept. 14 . Penn Yan’s Peter Nicholson shot a 47 and was the overall medalist in this match. The Mustang falls to 3-5 with the loss.

Wayne 239 Penn Yan 271

The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s golf team dropped a 239-271 Finger Lakes East League decision to Wayne Sept. 12 at the Ontario Country Club in Wayne. Max Brodmann was Penn Yan’s top scorer carding a 48. Clay Koivuniemi chipped in a 50. Penn Yan’s season record stands at 3-4.

Waterloo 243 Penn Yan 250

The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s golf team dropped a 243-250 Finger Lakes East decision Sept. 8 in Waterloo. Peter Nicholson was Penn Yan’s top scorer, shooting a 43. Clay Koivuniemi carded a 446 while Max Brodmann chipped in a 49. Penn Yan’s season mark now stands at 3-3.
