The Penn Yan Mustang girl’s basketball team had a very productive holiday break.
The Orange and Blue crew competed in the annual Bath/Haverling “Coaches Versus Cancer” Holiday Tournament last week at Bath/Haverling High School.
Penn Yan 50 Bath 47
The local five opened the tournament with an exciting 50-47 victory over the host Bath Ram team. Senior Sydney Bloom once again led the Mustang scoring charge, notching 20 points. Peyton Comfort added 10 points while teammate Emma Harling added 6 points. Wellsville defeated Odessa-Montour in the tourney opener to set up a championship match featuring Penn Yan and Wellsville on Friday evening.

The Mustang girls were once again up to the task in Friday’s championship tilt against Wellsville. Penn Yan easily defeated the Southern Tier squad 55-42 to capture the tourney trophy. Odessa-Montour downed host Bath 47-43 to grab third place.
The Penn Yan girls enjoyed a 13-point, 8-rebound effort from Sydney Bloom to seal the championship win. Hannah Keech also added 13 points and 5 assists to the Mustang’s winning numbers. Peyton Comfort chipped in 11 points and 12 rebounds while Emma Harling contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds to this well balanced Penn Yan offense. The numbers added up to a nice post-Christmas gift for the Penn Yan Mustang girl’s basketball program. The Penn Yan J.V. girl’s team also posted a championship crown in the tournament’s J.V. tournament event.
The wins improved Penn Yan’s overall record to 5-3. They will return to Finger Lakes East League action Friday, Jan. 5 against Midlakes in Phelps.
