Mustangs will host Wayland-Cohocton Feb. 24; Wildcats travel to LeRoy Feb. 23

Penn Yan 69 Greece Olympia 60

The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s basketball team successfully took their first step toward a possible Section V championship Wednesday night in Penn Yan. The hometown Mustangs, the #2 seed in the Class B bracket, defeated a stubborn Greece Olympia team from Rochester 69-60 to advance to the next round of the tourney. They will host the #10 Wayland-Cohocton team at 7 p.m. Way-Co defeated Pal-Mac 90-79 to set up Saturday night’s game with Penn Yan.

Wednesday’s contest was a closely fought tussle between the two Class B teams. The Mustangs jumped out to an 18-15 lead after the first eight minutes and led 31-25 at the half. But the Greece Olympia boys fought back to narrow the margin to just two points, 46-44 after three quarters. The Orange and Blue cagers steeped up their game in the final stanza. A 23-16 run in the final quarter put this game in the win column for the battling Mustangs.

The Penn Yan scoring machine was a senior class production Wednesday night. Desmond Battin tallied 30 points to top the Mustang scoring sheet. He drained 5 three-pointers to account for half of his output. Dylan Stape added 23 points, including 5 of 7 from the charity stripe. The dynamic Penn Yan scoring duo hopes their host shooting hands will continue on Saturday night against Way-Co.

Marcus Whitman 53 Williamson 32

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat boy’s team opened their sectional season with a convincing 53-32 win over Williamson Feb. 20 in Gorham. The #5 seed Wildcats will take on the #4 seed LeRoy team in LeRoy Friday night in the next round of Class C1 action.

The Whitman five was led in scoring by Riley McLoud with 17 points. He also pulled down 7 rebounds and recorded 5 steals. Liam Prendergast added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jon McDonald and Seth Benedict tallied 9 points and 8 points respectively.
