The opening round of this year’s Section V Girl’s Basketball Tournament was not kind to the three local high school girl’s programs. Penn Yan, Marcus Whitman, and Dundee came up on the short end of their games in the opening rounds. All three teams will pack away their basketball equipment for another year.

Dansville 60 Penn Yan 46

The Penn Yan Mustang girl’s basketball team had hoped to make a solid run in this year’s Class B Section V Tournament. The #7 seed Mustang girls opened the tourney at home against the #10 seed Dansville team. They had hoped to use this opening home game as a springboard for a long postseason run. But it was not to be. Dansville short-circuited the Orange and Blue plans, defeating Penn Yan 60-46. The loss effectively ended the Penn Yan girl’s Section V hopes and their season.

The Mustang girls were once again led in scoring by their highly talented senior Sydney Bloom with 21 points. This was a memorable season for the Penn Yan hoops star. She went past the 1,000 points career mark earlier in the year. She finishes her Penn Yan basketball career with another strong scoring game. Ashley Sisson chipped in 14 points and added 14 rebounds. Jenna Curbeau recorded 12 rebounds and had 2 blocked shots. Joddie Decker scored 7 points and also had 8 rebounds.

In other Section V girl’s action, in Class C1 action, #7 seed Pembroke defeated #10 seed Marcus Whitman and in Class D1 action, #1 seed Wheatland-Chili rolled over #16 Dundee 66-27. Marcus Whitman and Dundee are eliminated from the Section V tournament with the losses.
