Penn Yan 10 Hazard, Ky. 5

The Penn Yan Mustang baseball team got to play a game on real grass for the first time this year April 3 at the Mingo Bay Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Orange and Blue nine liked this unique experience. The Mustangs downed a team from Hazard, Ky. 10-5 to win their 2018 season opener. Senior Derrick Riviello tossed 3 innings and also went 3-for-3 and drove in 4 runs to lead the Penn Yan charge. Catcher Peyton Schuck went 2-for-3 and knocked in 3 runs. Penn Yan (1-0) will face Petersburg, W.Va. next in the 3 day tournament.

Softball

Cassadaga Valley 4 Penn Yan 1

The Penn Yan Mustang softball team collected 7 hits in their opening game played against Cassadaga Valley in Myrtle Beach, S. C. April 2. But unfortunately for the Penn Yan girls, they could not get these runners to cross home plate. Penn Yan stranded 12 runners and fell 4-1 in their season opener. The lone Mustang run was produced by Melanie Gleason in the 7th inning. She singled and stole second base. After advancing on a sacrifice, Gleason scored on a pass ball. Kayla Hight went 2 for 4 for Penn Yan. Hannah Yonts also collected 2 hits.
