Boys Lacrosse: Mustangs down Marcellus 5-4 in double overtime
Penn Yan’s Colton Smith scored at the 2:18 mark of the second overtime period to give the Penn Yan Mustang’s an exciting, come from behind 5-4 win over a talented Marcellus team from Section 3 April 14. Smith ‘s winning tally was set up on a perfect pass from Conner Fingar. The visiting Mustangs traveled to Marcellus Saturday for this epic lax match. The Orange and Blue trailed 1-0 at the half and 4-3 after three quarters. Penn Yan rallied to tie the game at 4 with regulation time expiring. This set up the overtime winning heroics for the Mustangs and Colton Smith. The victory improved Penn Yan’s season record to 3-1.
Colton Smith ended the day with 2 goals and 1 assist. Austin Blumbergs also added 2 goals. Conner Fingar tallied 1 goal and an assist. Ayden Mowry and Dylan Stape had 1 and 2 assists respectively. Sophomore Jeff Kinyoun was spectacular in the nets for the Mustangs. He recorded 15 big saves in the win for the Orange and Blue lacrosse squad.
Marcus Whitman 14 Watkins Glen 5
The Marcus Whitman Wildcat lacrosse team rolled over Watkins Glen 14-5 April 14 in Gorham. The Wildcats jumped out to an 11-2 at the half and rolled on to the 14-5 win. The victory was Whitman’s first of the new season. They are 1-3 overall.
The Whitman offense was led by Jeremy Dornford (2 goals), Bryan Herod $ goals/1assit), Timmy Cornish (2 goals/2 assists), Schuyler Bredesen (2 goals/1 assist), Seth Benedict (2 goals/3 assists), Ezera Jones (1 goal), and DeCouteau Blueye (1goal). Robert Craine and Michael Dhondt played a half game each in goal for the Wildcats. They recorded 6 and 3 save respectively.
Livonia-Avon 17 Marcus Whitman 16 OT
The Wildcat boys dropped a 17-16 decision in overtime to Livonia-Avon April 12. Whitman trailed 9-8 at the half but battled back to tie the game at 16 after regulation time ran out. Seth Benedict scored 6 goals for the Wildcats and also added 4 assists. DeCouteau Blueye added 4 goals while Schuyler Bredesen added 3 goals and 2 assists. Also scoring for the Wildcats was Ezera Jones with 1 goal and 1 assist, Bryan Herod 1 goal and 1 assist, Jeremy Dornford 1 goal, and Timmy Cornish with 6 assists. Michael Dhondt picked up 11 saves in goal for Whitman.
Penn Yan 9 East Rochester 0
The Penn Yan Mustang baseball team improved their early season record to 3-2 with an 8-0 non-league win over East Rochester on the road April 13. The Mustangs are a perfect 2-0 in Finger Lakes East League play.
Friday’s contest with the E.R. Bombers was a pitcher’s duel for 7 innings. The game was tied 0-0 after 7 innings. The visiting Mustangs plated 8 runs in the 8th inning to salt away the win.
Penn Yan’s Greg Hoke hurled an early season masterpiece for the Orange and Blue. He went the distance limiting the Bombers to just 1 hit. The Mustangs will return to Finger Lakes East action this week.
HAC 13 Dundee 6
The Dundee Scot softball team dropped a 13-6 Finger Lakes West League decision to H.A.C. in Dundee April 13. For Dundee, Makenzie Strait went 2-for-3 at the plate. Bri Maloy also went 2-for-4.
Penn Yan 5 Midlakes 0
The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s tennis team picked up their first win of the season defeating Midlakes 5-0 in Penn Yan on Friday afternoon. Austin Lafferty, Lukas Spears, and Alex Theismeyer scored straight-set wins in their singles matches for Penn Yan. In doubles action, Penn Yan’s Conner Hunter/Cole Egburtson and Jeremy Fenton/Reid Castner also scored wins. Penn Yan evens their record at 1-1 with the victory.
