For the second time in two years, the Penn Yan Mustang girl’s lacrosse team was defeated by Pal-Mac in a Section V title game. The Mustang girl’s team dropped a 12-6 decision to Pal-Mac in the Section D, Section V title game played at Pittsford-Sutherland High School Tuesday (May 29). The Orange and Blue lady laxers entered the contest as the No. 2 seed in the tourney. Pal-Mac, the No. 4 seed, made it to the final by upsetting the #1 seeded Waterloo girls.
The Red Raiders controlled the game from the outset, jumping ahead 5-1 at the half and holding off the Mustang’s attempt for a comeback in the second half. Pal-Mac outscored the Yates County laxers 7-5 in the second half.
Penn Yan’s scoring ledger was led by Elissa Callaway’s 3 goals. Alli Olevnik added 2 goals and Hannah Keech scored 1. Senior Sydney Bloom dished out 3 assists. Orange and Blue goaltender, Alexandra Cox had a strong game in the nets for Penn Yan. She made a series of key saves early in the contest to keep the game within reach of the Mustang ladies. Over the final games of the season, Alex Cox stepped up her game to help propel the Mustang girls to the Section V finals. Cox, and seniors Elissa Callaway, Hannah Keech, and Sydney Bloom were named to the Section V Class D All-Tournament team. The Mustang girls end their 2018 campaign with a 12-5 record. Pal-Mac, who will now advance to the New York State tournament, improves to 14-5 with the victory.
