The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s golf team scored two more victories last week to improve their early season record to 3-0 before falling to Geneva Aug. 31 .

Penn Yan 228 Newark 285

On Monday Aug. 27, the Mustangs defeated Newark 228-285 at Lakeside Country Club in Penn Yan. Peter Nicholson and Kevin Smith both birdied the par 4 second hole. Nicholson carded a 39 to lead the Orange and Blue golfers. Kevin Smith shot a 43. Teammate Max Brodman came in with a 44.

Penn Yan 233, Wayne 234

Penn Yan scored their third straight league win Tuesday Aug. 28, edging Wayne 233-234 at Lakeside Country Club. Clayton Koivuneimi topped the Mustang squad shooting a 43. Peter Nicholson finished just behind him with a 44. Max Brodman and Cameron Bassage ended the match shooting 47 and 48 respectively.

Geneva 236 Penn Yan 292

The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s golf suffered their first loss of the season dropping a 236-292 decision to the Geneva Panthers Aug. 31 at Lakeside Country Club. Peter Nicholson led the Mustang golfers carding a 46. Clayton Koivuniemi, Max Brodman, and Kevin Smith came in with 47’s. Koivuniemi picked up a birdie on the 8th hole for Penn Yan.

Penn Yan 3 Midlakes 2

The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s soccer team scored an opening week victory Aug. 30by defeating Midlakes 3-2. Tyler Griffin keyed the Mustang win with 2 goals. Brighan Hansen recorded an assist. Eric Fingar also picked up a goal.

M. Whitman 3 South Seneca 2

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat boy’s soccer team recorded a 3-2 win over South Seneca in Sodus Aug. 31. For the Wildcats, Ryan Herod scored a goal while Caleb McDonough added a goal and an assist. Jordan Lahue scored what proved to be the winning goal in the second half. Lahue also added an assist on the McDonough goal.

Girl’s Soccer

Penn Yan 3 N. R.-Wolcott 0

The Penn Yan Mustang girl’s soccer team improved their early season record to 2-0 with a 3-0 shutout win over North Rose-Wolcott Aug. 30 in Penn Yan. Penn Yan junior Hayley Anderson scored at the 3 minute mark of the opening half to give the Orange and Blue a quick 1-0 lead. Sierra Harrison added an assist on the goal. In the second half Penn Yan’s Leah Moniot scored to give the hometown girls a 2-0 lead. Freshman Sierra Harrison tallied the final Penn Yan goal with Hayley Anderson adding an assist.

Dundee 3 Hammondsport 1

The Dundee Scot girl’s soccer team defeated Hammondsport 3-1 in Hammondsport Aug. 31 Hallie Empsom accounted for all three Dundee goals. Cheyenne Cummings and Lauren Howell added assists. Karyanna Rutlege recorded 9 saves in the nets for Dundee.

M Whitman 5 South Seneca 4

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat girl’s soccer team defeated South Seneca 5-4 in a Finger Lakes West League contest played Aug. 30 in Ovid. Scoring goals for Whitman was Evelyn Lambert, Nichaela Commisso, and Ari Beverly. Charlotte Alvord, and Nichaela Commisso added assists.

Girls Tennis

Penn Yan 4 Mynderse 2

The Penn Yan Mustang girls tennis team picked up their second strait win with a 4-1 decision over Mynderse in Seneca Falls Aug. 30 Molly Pullen, Claire Pullen, and Sam Denson record victories in their singles matches. The Orange and Blue doubles team of Abby Garvey and Sydney Moravec also recorded a big win.

In other girl’s tennis action, Wayne defeated Marcus Whitman 3-2 in Ontario Center Aug. 30.

Penn Yan 4 Midlakes 0

The Penn Yan Mustang girl’s tennis team opened their 2018 season on a positive note, shutting out Midlakes 4-0 in Phelps Aug. 27. Molly Pullen, Claire Pullen, and Sam Denson swept their singles matches, all three winning in straight sets (6-0, 6-0 ). Midlakes did not field doubles teams. Penn Yan’s Abby Garvey and Sydney Moravec accepted a forfeit win in the first doubles match. Penn Yan opens the season at 1-0.

M. Whitman 3 Pal-Mac 2

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat girl’s tennis team scored a 3-2 victory over Pal-Mac in Palmyra in their 2018 season opener Aug. 27. Whitman picked up two key singles wins from Camry Semans and Jane Snaith. A doubles win from the team of Rebecca Frarey and Caty Goodman sealed the deal for the Marcus Whitman squad.
