Decker and sixth place finisher Gracie Murphy will compete in the state meet. Dundee's Matt Wood finished fourth in boy's Class D competition while Ayden Mowry from Penn Yan finished 7th in Class C.
Penn Yan and Dundee cross country runners put together solid times this past weekend at the Section V Championships at Midlakes High School.
Penn Yan’s Joddie Decker took the individual title with a time of 20:07.6 while teammate Gracie Murphy also had a nice showing, coming in 6th place at 20:53.0. Macie Nicholson came in just behind Murphy at 7th with a time of 21:05.8. Both Decker and Murphy qualified to run in the New York State Public High School Cross Country Championship next weekend at Sunken Meadow State Park at Long Island. The showing by Penn Yan’s top runners helped the team earn a third place overall.
Jaina Doyle, Paige McKee, and Jenna Curbeau finished 25th, 36th, and 43rd to help the team.
Coach Rick Smith was pleased with his team and the direction cross country in Penn Yan is going. “I took over the cross country program four years ago and this is the fourth year we have sent an athlete (to state-level competition),” he explained. “But this is the first year we are sending two (runners). All my athletes are hard workers and I look forward to sending more.”
For the boys, Dundee’s Matt Wood earned an impressive 4th place showing with a time of 18:30.3. He finished in 11th overall in the combined D/DD class in sectionals.
“Matt made some amazing improvements this season, improving his 5k time by over 2 minutes,” said coach Patrick Dunham. “Matt missed the state qualifying placement by 23 seconds as 8th place was the cutoff.”
Penn Yan’s Ayden Mowry finished 7th with a time of 18:19.6 and Connor Moore came in 19th at 19:01.8. David Young (32nd), James Tette (34th), Daniel Jiang (74th), and Jon Gulick (112th) also ran for the Mustangs.
