The 2009/10 Penn Yan Mustang girls basketball team opened their season earlier this month with a win at home against their southern Yates County neighbor, Dundee.

On the Tuesday before Christmas, the Penn Yan girls completed the two game season sweep with a 41-35 win over the homestanding Lady Scots.

The first half of this contest was a nip and tuck event with both teams exchanging baskets.
Dundee quickly jumped to a 10-6 lead after one quarter, but the Mustangs mimicked their hosts in the second quarter outscoring them 10-6.
With the score knotted at 16 at the half, both teams had to start from scratch in the third quarter.

It was Penn Yan that would respond the strongest in the stanza.
In effect, they put the game away, outscoring the Scots 13-4. The Dundee girls tried to stage a comeback in the fourth quarter outscoring their guests 15-12, but this would to be too little, too late.

The Lady Mustangs, on the strength of the 41-35 win, improved their overall record to 5-1, 2-1 in the Finger Lakes East.  At the Christmas break, Dundee sports a 2-3 record but are 2-1 in the Finger Lakes West.

Rachel Roddenbery was the leading Penn Yan scorer with 17 points.  Emily Simpson added 10 points in the Orange and Blue’s victory.

Casi Strait topped out the Dundee scoring sheet with 11 points. She also hauled down six rebounds and had three steals.
Sami Clingerman contributed 10 points and three steals for Dundee.

The Dundee girls are competing in the Steuben County officials tournament in Alfred this week. They host Mynderse on Jan. 6.

The Penn Yan girls are taking a break until their Jan. 8 game against Midlakes in the Penn Yan Elementary gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
