The Penn Yan Academy Mustang bowling team, under the guidance of Coach Mindy Johnson, had an extraordinary run this past winter, enjoying a very successful regular season and a solid run in the Section V Tournament.
In fact, the Mustang boy’s team won the Finger Lakes East and grabbed a Section V title. This girl’s team was also very competitive. Even though this winter season team ended their season months ago, the success story continues on.
Kelsey Broome, a 2010 graduate of PYA and member of this year’s Lady Mustang team, won the Pepsi State Tournament held at Rome in May. Kelsey won the 12 and over handicap division. The former Mustang bowling stalwart earned a wonderful trophy from Pepsi and a $1000 college scholarship for her winning effort.
It was a difficult road to get to the championship round in Rome. Kelsey had to qualify through her local league in Penn Yan at Doug Kent’s Lakeside Lanes.
From there, she had to advance to a regional qualifier at Roseland Bowl in Canandaigua. Kelsey had to finish either first or second in this event to qualify and advance. She finished first.
At the state tournament in Rome, Kelsey tied for fourth place in the first six games and had to bowl a roll-off with another girl to continue on. She accomplished this and advanced to win the entire tournament. It was an amazing comeback for the talented Penn Yan kegler.
Bowling has been part of Kelsey’s entire young life. She started in the Penn Yan Junior program at Doug Kent’s and continued there for 10 years.
In high school, Kelsey was a team leader and captain for the Lady Mustangs. She bowled for the Orange and Blue for five years.
Her diligent efforts and hard work continues to pay off. Kelsey Broome can now add State Champion to her bowling resume.
