The Penn Yan Mustang boys bowling team accomplished a feat that hasn’t been done for the past six years.

With a 7-0 victory over Waterloo at Sunset Bowl on Wednesday, the Mustangs clinched the Finger Lakes East Crown, knocking out the defending champion Newark Reds.
In fact, the Newark squad has won the title the past six years. It was a memorable afternoon for the local bowlers. They have effectively made themselves the team to beat in the Finger Lakes High School Bowling.

In December, the Mustangs won the prestigious Newkirk Christmas Tournament in Canandaigua and now they can lay claim to another prize, a Finger Lakes League championship.
On Tuesday afternoon in Newark at Doug Kent’s Rose Bowl, Penn Yan defeated the defending champion Newark Reds 5-2 to set up their championship clincher the next afternoon in Border City. The high- flying Mustangs outscored the talented Newark team 3,664 pins to 3,004.
This was the largest aggregate pin total for the Penn Yan bowlers this season.  It was a total team effort.

“So many different players have stepped up to the plate when we needed them and it has truly been a team effort so far,” says coach Mindy Johnson.

Ryan Johnson rolled games of 237, 245 and 259 to pace the Orange and Blue bowling juggernaut.

Derrick Fleischman added a 665 series (225-233), Eric Pulver 638 (221-223) and Dan Fox 601 (208-208) for the Mustangs.

The next day against Waterloo, the Mustangs rolled over the Indians behind Pete Fox’s leading 732 series (274-269).  Johnson contributed a 663 (225-227-211). Pulver rolled a 659 (245-233).  The champion Mustangs improved their record to 63-14.

The Mustang girls bowling squad has also been enjoying a fine season.  They kept their hope for a second place finish alive with two more big wins last week.  On Tuesday in Newark, the Lady Mustangs blanked the Reds 7-0.  Brooke Parsons rolled a 571 series (180-193) to pace the Lady ‘Stang attack.  Jacqie Stryker added a 203 single game in this Penn Yan victory.

On Wednesday, Penn Yan downed Waterloo 5-2 to run their season record to 61-16.
Brendaya Parsons bowled a 527 (210) to lead the Orange and Blue keglers. Shelby Button added a 519 (205) and Kelsey Broome a 516.
