Writer Thomas Wolfe stated “You can’t go home again” in his classic 1940 novel. But the wonderful prose and writings of the incomparable Mr. Wolfe can not be applied to the world of women’s lacrosse, at least not in this area.
Last week Keuka College announced they have selected former PYA Lady Mustang lacrosse standout, Kelly Lickert, as their new women’s lacrosse coach.
Lickert, a Penn Yan resident, helped the Mustangs win a New York State Class B championship in 2004. She graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 2005 and was an integral part of that ultra talented and successful Lady Mustang lacrosse program.
After high school, Kelly starred for the Limestone College women’s lacrosse team.
She was the Gaffney, S.C. school’s all time leading scorer with 259 career points including 121 goals. Limestone College won three consecutive Conference Carolina championships and also advanced three straight years to the NCAA D-II final four during her college career.
She earned All-America honors three times also. Kelly was also selected to play for an American college all-star team down-under in Australia.
Playing in this prestigious international tournament in an honor extended to a very few nationwide.
Now, Kelly Lickert is bringing her extensive and successful lacrosse resume back home to Penn Yan and will lead the relatively new Keuka College women’s lacrosse team to another level.
In deference to Thomas Wolfe, there are times you can come home again. By the way, this must also pertain to men’s lacrosse too. Another PYA Mustang lacrosse standout, Jason Paige, coaches the Keuka College men’s lacrosse team also.
Kelly comes to Keuka College from Rochester’s Nazareth College, where she served as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach last season. She also has been very active coaching in the local Penn Yan summer lacrosse programs.
She has also worked with the Hobart and William Smith summer lacrosse clinics.
Lickert earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Wellness at Limestone College.
She brings a wealth of lacrosse knowledge to the local college’s women’s lacrosse program. “It is nice to be back home,” stated Lickert, “I look forward to providing more opportunities for young girls in the Finger Lakes region and beyond to play college lacrosse.”
She believes the program has the potential to blossom into one of the area’s premier women’s college lacrosse programs. Lickert inherits a team that went 10-5 in 2010 and won the NEAC and North Atlantic Conference championships.
So there is plenty of potential already there to build on.
Penn Yan’s Kelly Lickert is certainly capable of taking this program to even higher levels. Welcome home Kelly!
