The Newark Reds are generally regarded as one of the top boy’s basketball programs in Section V, if not the state.
The young Penn Yan Mustang basketball team would be hard pressed to argue against that statement.
On Friday evening in Penn Yan, the upstart Mustang five entertained the high-powered Reds. The ensuing 32 minutes, to say the least, had a definite Red tinge.
Newark quickly showed why they hold their lofty position in the basketball ranks racing to a 47-4 halftime lead and easily posted their ninth league win of the season, crushing Penn Yan 74-20.
Falling behind 64-7 after three quarters, Penn Yan did rally to outscore the Reds in the final quarter, 13-10.
Anthony Luppino tallied 7 points to lead the Mustang scoring. Cody Richardson added 5 points and Jim Burdette 4. Penn Yan’s record drops to 0-9 in the Finger Lakes East.
They will face Marcus Whitman and Waterloo on the road this week.
Wayne 59
Marcus Whitman 43
The Wayne Central Fighting Eagles raced to a 31-15 halftime lead over Marcus Whitman on Friday night in Rushville and held on for a 58-43 victory over the Wildcats.
Whitman did narrow the margin with a 23-15 run in the final stanza.
Cal Andrews scored 20 points to lead the Wildcat in the scoring ledger.
Jack Meyer added 10 points and Jesse Moore 8.
Marcus Whitman’s record drops to 1-8 in the Finger Lakes East.
They host Penn Yan Tuesday evening.
