150 Years Ago November 28, 1872 ELIAS HOWE SEWING MACHINES... Twenty days from today, I want ten men to go to Buffalo to sell Elias Howe Sewing Machines in the city and in the country. Wagons furnished free, salary and commission paid. Fare paid to Buffalo. Call on Hicks & Chapman during the week at their shoe store in Penn Yan; they will state terms in my absence, or on me at their store Saturday afternoons and evenings. PUBLIC LECTURE - Remember the lecture at Bush’s Hall on Tuesday evening, Dec. 31. The Rev. W. W. Lloyd, of Poughkeepsie, is a lecturer of a high order; promises a feast of intellect. His subject is “An Hour With the Poet Byron,” of whom it may be said, he was the soul of (it may be unbridled) genius beyond that of any other man living or dead.

A LIVERY TEAM STOLEN AND RECOVERED—

On Saturday last a stranger applied for and obtained at the livery stables of Tompkins & Johnson, in this village, a horse and buggy to go to Flint Creek and return the same day. He was furnished with a good rig—in fact this firm has none but good outfits, and departed. But neither the same day nor the next witnessed his return, and our friends began to “smell a rat.” Realizing that delays are dangerous in such cases, they on Monday determined to advertise the felony. Accordingly bills were procured at this office and scattered by mail in every direction, reciting the facts in the case and describing the property and the felon. On Tuesday about 11 A. M , the owners were gladdened by the receipt of a telegram from Penn Yan that the livery establishment could be found in that “out of the world” place. But the false pretender had made tracks to parts unknown. He is described as a sandy complexioned man, 22 years of age or there abouts, slender build, about 5 feet 9 inches in height. Messrs, Tumpkins & Johnson will willingly squander a few dollars for securing his arrest.

A GOOD IMPROVEMENT —Simeon Cole has recently made valuable improvements in his Saw Mill near his home in Larzelere’s Hollow in Jerusalem, and now propels it by a steam engine. As the saw makes a great deal more than the necessary amount of fuel from material that would be otherwise mere waste, the substitution of steam is by no means expensive. Mr. Cole is now prepared to saw lumber, lath, shingle, etc., and to execute all work proper for a saw mill to do with dispatch and in the best manner. He has a very fine lot of excellent standing lumber of his own, with which he can furnish a large amount of work for his mill if he choses. Mr. Cole’s mill will be a great public convenience in his locality and is an improvement worthy of notice.

November 29, 1922 THE TROLLEY LINE - The Lake Shore trolley road is shut down because of boiler troubles. The boilers on both engine units gave out the same day. They are waiting for new boiler tubes.

NEW PHONOGRAPHS - The Bush Music House had a parade through the main streets Monday. Two Buick loads of new Edison phonographs were exhibited. There were tooting horns and banners.

NOTE: John Roche was born in Penn Yan in 1893. This was the first of 64 movies that he appeared in between 1922 and 1952. He died in Los Angeles in 1952.

Ys AND OTHER Ys The Thanksgiving meeting and dinner of the Y’s and Other Y’s Club were held with Mrs. Earl Morse on Liberty street Monday evening. The table was centered by a fruit piece surrounded by red candles, which gave a most artistic setting for the delectable repast. The evening was spent informally with visiting, songs, and music on the Edison.

BASKETBALL - The Penn Yan Midgets and the Manchester, N. Y., Triangles will contest honors in basket ball Thursday evening at Cornwell’s Opera House. Game begins at 8 o’clock. Admission 25 cents.

75 Years Ago November 27, 1947 MAYOR RAPALEE’S THANKSGIVING PROCLAMATION - “We come to this Thanksgiving season with ample reason to be thankful. In a warwracked world our country stands undamaged, a land of plenty in a world of want. True, we are concerned with the price of food to the consumer, but no American is starving. We lack adequate housing, but we are not living amid rubble and ruin. We still have not enough of some things, but in a world of havenots we alone have goods to spare. The peace of the world is not yet secure, but we are making real progress toward checking those who threaten it. We should be humbly thankful for our blessings, not take them as our due. We did not create this rich land and its institutions; we inherited them. The men and women who laid the foundations of our country labored early and late to build them strong. We have more freedom than any people on Earth. Our rewards for labor and enterprise are the highest. Although we have wasted and spoiled some of our rich estate, ours is still the most bountiful land on Earth. But we must conserve and save, or we shall one day find ourselves, too, with more people than we can supply. Produce, conserve, share, and save: that is the recipe for happy future Thanksgivings for us all. May yours be happy.”
